I've often visited Minenkopf, but never left Kai side. This is a far cry from the crowded road and all bachelors and deer parties. We were at the Kai Gasthof for August Bankholiday, what a treat. The evening we arrived... a table for a family was clear that we no longer have to look for our meals, everything was just delicious. The hosts were just a pleasure and our room was immaculate, we had the pleasure of the family suite with sea view balcony wow. Breakfast was something else, it's probably the word. I know where I will stay when I visit Minehad again, just a great peaceful and relaxing stay.
My wife and I have just moved to Minehead and are trying all the local pubs to identify which might be our `local’. Decided to try the Quay Inn on a Sunday mid afternoon in September. Walked in and almost bumped into a gentleman heading towards...the bar. I apologized he said nothing. I go to the bar, same gentleman appears behind it. He does not say a word – no welcome, no “what would you like”, he just looks at me with a blank expression. I ask for a beer (Note: only one ale tap was in operation – Exmoor Gold . He still does not say a word to me, but instead starts talking to a young lady (I assume a new hire and tells her that “this is one of the liveliest beers, so this is how you pull it”. Despite his best efforts, glass still considerably short of full. Looks at me again and he *may* have asked if I wanted anything else, but it was honestly difficult to determine if he was speaking, or just clearing his throat. We get our second drink from the young lady – who at least was polite and asked if my wife wanted ice. The gentleman sidled off (again without a word . I usually only give good reviews, as I like to encourage people to frequent places that deserve custom. But I just feel compelled to submit a negative review this time around. In these difficult times for the hospitality industry, I just cannot fathom how anyone operating a pub can do anything other than at least be cordial and engaging when a customer comes in. I appreciate that anyone can have a bad day, and that the general public can be unreasonable and demanding at times – but I did my level best to be friendly and to engage the folks behind the bar. I received no welcome, no engagement and (much as I hate to say it we consequently have no desire to make the Quay Inn our local. Truly disappointing. We will try it again at some point, but only after we’ve tried every pub in Minehead first (tough job, but someone has to etc. etc. : . Hope your experience was/will be better than ours.
The room was dirty! Bad points as follows: Bed Head Board was discouraging and it was either woodworm or Fly Poop on it as well as dirt you can see on the photo. Skirting Board had layers of dust on. Table had... dust, I could run my finger over it and collect the dust. The wall had splashes of something. I had a baby towel and where I ever touched was dirt. Good points. The man behind the bar was friendly. We got our money back. View from the room was nice. Luckily, we found somewhere different, which was clean. Have other photos, but the headboard was the worst for us.
A good starting point when you arrive at the South West Coast Path, especially due to the excellent location of the inn right on the beach. Breakfast was definitely good and the owners and staff were very friendly and helpful. The room was cozy, but could... update a bit, especially the showerdrains. Overall, however, definitely a nice place for a short stay or a stop. Not very good, but certainly 3.5 stars in our books.
