El Zunzun - Vestavia Hills

We visited to celebrate a birthday with family and tried several different dishes. I absolutely loved the desserts; everything tasted really good and homemade. The only item I wasn’t a big fan of was the warm salsa. I guess it’s similar to warm tap beer you might find in the UK, but I prefer my salsa cold and refreshing. Overall, I’d rate the food a 5/5.

The restaurant boasts beautiful decor that immerses you in a Mexican atmosphere. The service is excellent, with very friendly staff, and the place is clean. They offer a great selection of quality tequilas and mezcal. We tried the queso fundido with cheese and chorizo, as well as nachos topped with steak, both of which were delicious. There's also a parking lot available, so plan to arrive by 6:00 PM.

We went Saturday night for a birthday dinner, and will never return back. At 9:13pm, as we were literally putting food in our mouths, the server asked if he could bring our checks and to-go boxes. I looked at my watch and said I thought you closed at 10pm? He said oh we do, but if it’s not busy, we close at 9pm. Then he said if we wanted, he could ask the manager if we could stay. Ummmm, ask the manager if we can stay during normal open business hours? Sure. They turned off all the lights inside, sat in the dark, and watched me clear the plates from our table. They then came out, said they were going home, locked the doors, and told us to exit out of Leaf and Petal. On top of that, the food was disgusting. The mahi mahi on the tacos was in the shape of big rectangles. A big rectangle of meat, with a soggy tortilla wrapped around it. The nachos were insignificant, basically just tortilla chips swimming in a sea of queso, topped with shredded lettuce. Disappointing all around, especially since it was a night to celebrate someone’s special day.

As a picky native Texan that loves tex-mex, this joint hits the spot. Order the table side guacamole. It's also family friendly. Nice patio area next to leaf and petal.Kid-friendliness: Can't emphasize enough on how great the staff is with kids.
