It is not quiet, located above a saloon and next to a train that whistles several times a day. That said, we smiled all weekend. Nice owners. Another bar right across the street. A lot of history in the air, quaint furniture. Took the train ride, at the R.R museum next door, which was nice. Rather like a bed and breakfast, without the breakfast...although they did serve biscuits and gravy one morning. We have family in the area, and this will be our regular sleeping destination, when we visit. Giving four stars, for a unique experience. We are happy customers. For less adventurous folks, stay in Bardstown. **** Mary was good!
This family owned for six generations Inn sits above a bar that is a regular of the locals. I had the honor of meeting the owner and learned about the bar, the fire in 1913 and how it had been restored. The bar is an amazing piece of woodwork. I was welcomed like family. This is a little gem of a place. New Haven sits back off of I-65 about 15 miles, but it is worth the drive into the small town. If you like trains, you are in luck as the historic train station is just outside the inn. I stayed in room 6, the largest of the rooms, on the corner directly above the bar. I believe they serve breakfast on the weekends. My room had a shower, but it appears some rooms might share a shower. Glorious simple antiques. It could benefit from more work (my room had a patch that needed to be repainted), but the hospitality is genuine and worth it's weight. The bar food is just that, simple burgers and fries. The fish sandwich looked wonderful. I would imagine the weekends would be busy with locals, so you should be prepared to join in. If you want a drive off the beaten path, take 31E and you will run into the birthplace of Abraham Lincoln and wonderful old barns with See Rock City' signs. This place is not for everyone, but if you appreciate simple, southern charm, you will never want to leave.
The Sherwood Inn is a very simple 1930's style hotel. Located yards away from the KY Railway Museum it is very convenient for Steam Engine or Diesel Locomotive nuts like me. The rooms are very simple as was the style. The hotel only has 5 rooms and is located above a saloon style tavern with a great atmosphere. The locals are very hospitable and enjoy a good beer. If you looking for pampering or all that sissy stuff this is not the place for you! If you want a different experience and love real live steam engines, book a cab ride at the KY Railway Museum and spend the night at the Sherwood Inn! Fall is the best time!
This is an excellent stop on the Bourbon Trail. It is a historic guesthouse that is undergoing a comeback! Currently, they only offer sandwiches and appetizers on their menu, but they have plans to add more options soon. I tried the BBQ bacon chicken sandwich and it was delicious! It was a bit spicy, but very tasty. While I was there, I had the pleasure of meeting the great-great-grandson of the original owner and learning about the history of the place. The guesthouse was established in 1875 and rebuilt in 1912 after a city fire. They have imported original paintings and a bar from another country. They are in the final stages of renovating the rooms above the restaurant, so guests can stay there while visiting the Bourbon trail or attending a concert or tour at the Log Still Distillery.
The staff at the restaurant was extremely friendly and welcoming. The room was spacious, clean, and equipped with all necessary amenities.
