We had the same night as john h and our experience is completely different. nous avons mangé ici le même soir que john h et nous avions une experience trés different. the meat riz de veau, which is difficult to prepare) was great....La viande riz de veau difficil a cuire) était magnifieke. longoustines excellent. we helped john h and the staff with translations about “medium rare” and “a point”. a point means really mediocre and not mediocre rare medium saignant) nous avons aidé john h et les empoyés avec traduire. it was a great misunderstanding for problems with the French and English languages. etait une problème de langue et pas comprendre. Therefore I would really recommend this beautiful and cozy restaurant. 23/8/18.
In this small village with houseboat visited. best is this restaurant. dinner was amazing. from amuse bouche to dessert was pure taste celebration! high recommended.
In my last review of this splendid spot, I waxed in extravagant praise of their Cote de Boeuf, which was part of last year 's summer menu. Recently Facebook revealed that it was also going to be part of this year 's summer menu....so the Wednesday lunch...destination was instantly decided. I emailed my partner in lunch, Rex Mackay..the Laird of Strathnaver..and phoned the restaurant for a reservation; then sat back in happy anticipation of another carnovores delight. Adam Richman, eat your heart out... although it seems our TV Man v. Food isn 't flavour of the month, these days, after an exchange of ruderies on Twitter. Whatever....anyway, off we toddled to the Gaité in happy anticipation. It 's a very relaxing sort of spot...we went in and were seated at our usual table...got an aperitif and scanned the menu. DISASTER!!!! This was still the previous menu.....no Cote de Boeuf.....crestfallen, heartbroken, generally cheesed off, I peered at every page...and no sign of the delectable piece of bovine extravagance. BLAST!!! Then the nice young lady came over....and I mentioned that the Cote de Boeuf was absent...and she told me that their new menu would be starting NEXT week. However, since they had recognised me during my phone call, the Chef had been out to the Boucherie and acquired a Cote de Boeuf especially for me!!! Now, this is over and above any service I have ever had from any restaurant anywhere....and my day suddenly became all sparkly and full of joie de vivre. She explained that it WAS for deux personnes , but as before I didn 't see that as much of an obstacle. So we ordered.... We both started with Hure de Poulet, which is a collection of small pieces of chicken and vegetables en gelée, with a basil dressing....delicious, and going perfectly with the bottle of rosé which seemed appropriate to a hot day. The Laird professed disgust with rosé wine, but I persuaded him to try some and we ended up sharing the bottle!! Then came the centrepiece of the whole repast...the Cote de Boeuf. I raved on about this in my last review and can see no reason to go through it all again; suffice it to say that standards have not slipped and any proper meat eating neanderthal would be in raptures!! I would, once more, agree that the average appetite would best treat it as a dish for two....since I am about as big as two standard people it didn 't trouble me overwhelmingly! Rex, not being into Beef, had gone for the rabbit and that went down just as well. After a bit of a pause, we went on to the Financier au Chocolat and the Salad de Fraise au Vinaigre Balsamic...both forming a great counterpoint to the meaty marathon that had gone before. The whole thing was concluded with coffee, armagnac and an Aberlour for the Laird. I am so pleased that the little village where my holiday home is has got a restaurant worthy of multiple visits. I used to live in Kew, near the Gardens....and couldn 't wait to escape to France and my boat. Since I sold the place in Kew and became A Freeborn Man, of the travelling people , my old stamping ground has acquired everything one might wish; decent shops, restaurants and bars....and my French outpost had lagged sadly behind. Now, with the advent of the Gaité, I have an establishment that can hold it 's head up in any company. It follows the best recipe for a small restaurant...a restricted choice of properly fresh food, cooked to order with love and attention...rather than a huge choice of different dishes which you know must be coming out of the freezer! I can commend it to all who pass...anyone mooching along the Loire Canal who has the chance to stop at Léré would be fools to pass up the chance of spending a lunchtime or evening here.
Excellent Food in la Gaité, in a recently refurbished Dining Room in an attractive old building. Service was friendly, and prices fair. The only minor draw-back was the speed of service, not very fast as all food is cooked to order. Allow 2 1/2 hours...for a proper meal, 2 hours for something simpler. I will go there again whenever I have the chance!
