This restaurant recently underwent a change in ownership, with the new owner having no prior experience in the restaurant or cafe industry. Unfortunately, customers have been experiencing long wait times of over 45 minutes for their orders, with those who came in after receiving their food first. This has caused distress among customers, and even the quality of the Americano coffee has been lacking. It is a disappointing situation for all involved.
I have been to this charming little restaurant multiple times. The atmosphere is very friendly and relaxed. The prices are reasonable and the homemade food is delicious. I highly recommend trying the apple raspberry pie, it is absolutely delightful.
We initially only planned on having coffee and cake at the Gibside Chapel tea room due to its high prices and crowds. However, upon entering, we noticed poached egg and asparagus on toast on the menu. Despite not being very hungry, the chef kindly split a single serving onto two plates, accommodating our individual egg preferences (Alison prefers it hard, while I like mine runny over the asparagus). The toast was excellent and overall we found the meal very enjoyable. The cake was also delicious, though I won't go into detail as it would make this review too lengthy.
We ordered our meals from the menu before Garry told us about the pies; luckily he hadn't started our order so we were able to change. My son said the ham and egg pie was delicious so was the special christmas pie. Too good not to go back to!
