Fiancé called wanting to get Chinese food tonight and wanted to get a townie favorite, Grand Cafe?what a treat! We?ve gone in restaurant before but this was our first time carrying out. Immediately upon cracking open the box my orange chicken was sealed away in, I knew something was off. The sauce was an atomic orange and looked like jello that was beginning to set. Nevertheless, I took a bite. The flavor was okay but the texture?I will never forget. Perhaps the takeout box worked more like a sauna and made all the contents melt together into an unpleasant mush. Like I said, flavor was okay! But?couldn?t eat much because I couldn?t get over how mushy it was. The vegetable fried rice we ordered was not vegetable unless pork is considered a vegetable. This was very disappointing for my vegetarian fiancé. Even more disappointing was the vegetable sub gum that was once a beacon of light in his memory, was now a lightbulb on the cusp of burning out. An overall disappointment. And to add insult to injury, we only got one, cracked fortune cookie.
A MUST TRY? Amazing Filipino spot with delicious selections! I was so happy to find this spot along my trip! All the food servings are enough to feed at least two people! Finally found a Filipino restaurant that serves crispy fried chicken skin?it was yummy! The kare-kare was creamy and full of ingredients?they definitely don?t skimp out! And ohhmyygoodness, the pork bbq was the highlight of my meal?it was fully cooked but still juicy and NOT OVERCOOKED! It was cooked in open-flame(I even ordered more to-go cuz it was soooo good) ???
Used to eat at the old downtown location for decades. Finally got to this location to have a PC tray. Food was excellent, very clean restaurant, friendly staff.
I have been a Customer of the Grand Cafe for many Years... going back to the early 1980's when it was located just West of the Scottish Rite Consistent in Bloomington. Although no longer located there, the Spirit continues at it's current location in the Oakland Commons. Much has changed, but the Grand Cafe is yet a Mysterious and Magical place... still as it was before! I hope that you partake of the Fine Food and the Spirit of the Grand Cafe... ... and You never know, maybe one day I might see You there, too! Bruno Biava ?
