Bidrage med feedbackGreat pub. Great food. Front of house very attentive and the chef (Paul) also came and checked that everything was OK. Please note that they were intending to close from 24/10/22 until about mid February 2023 so, check their website. A great shame as we have only just discovered it!
What a pub/restaurant! A picturesque quintessentially English pub in the lovely village of Hamstead Marshall where there is always a warm welcome from Stella and the team. Great food good choice across the menu and the Sunday roasts definitely rival The Woodspeen for taste and are great portion sizes. The decor is lovely in both the pub and the restaurant and the garden is a lovely place to unwind. They also brew some fabulous home made beers. Thoroughly recommended! I stayed here a few weeks ago and have been dithering about whether to write an honest review, because the landlady/owner was so friendly and welcoming. But then I reminded myself that these reviews are for the benefit of prospective clients, not the owners, and I use them to make decisions about bookings so it was right that I should give an honest review. I booked a room for myself and my dog. The room was large but the whole room and bathroom smelt musty and damp. The bathroom had not been cleaned properly and there were hairs on the floor. There were bits of black mould around the base of the shower. The shower was fine and powerful enough. The bed was so hard I had to ask for a second duvet that I could lie on. I know this is subjective but I have never had this problem before. The garden was very unkempt and scruffy and I accept that there had been a summer of drought followed by lots of rain but didn't feel this was a good reason. I should, I know, have said something when I checked in, but the owner was so welcoming I felt too awkward to do so my fault. Even the hand held card reader was dirty and sticky and this should have confirmed my suspicions right from the start. The breakfast food was good, but spoiled by the dirty table which was very sticky. There were only two other people staying not the owners fault but it did feel awkward for me in such a massive dining area. The owner opened her gas bill whilst I was having breakfast and said it was £16k and she would have to shut over the winter period. Not something I needed to know and another reason why I did not feel comfortable in complaining. It was obvious that she was running the hotel, kitchen, dining area and bar alone whilst I was there. I had booked for four nights but in the end only stayed for two. I had a family crisis I needed to attend to, but I must say I was glad to leave, even though I wasted a great deal of money which the owner was unable to refund. I'm baffled by the extremely positive reviews which appear here, which are polar opposite to mine, but I write this as I experienced it.
I had a wonderful stay at this restaurant on a Saturday night. The room was spacious and comfortable, with a modern bathroom. The pub garden is beautiful, serving Ramsbury ales on tap. The dinner was good, but the highlight was the cozy open fire in the lounge. The owner, Stella, is friendly and efficient. The breakfast was also delicious. I highly recommend this restaurant.
The lady taking our orders was friendly, helpful, and efficient, contributing to the good, relaxed atmosphere. As someone who is gluten intolerant, I was impressed with how well I was catered for. We definitely plan on returning as it felt like we had stumbled upon a hidden gem. It's no surprise that the restaurant was so busy. My husband and I are already planning on staying there the next time we visit family in the area.
