That was hilarious and it was couple years back on durga pooja. Not to mention the mismanagement/service delays they were doing and hence the original 1 star. Food was ok though and had Bengali authenticity. Original 1 star with no comments.
This place doesn't have the best food. Often it is cold. My experience has been on and off. The service here seems very inexperienced. I would suggest another Indian place.
Had a very pathetic experience today at this restaurant. We had booked for a party for 30+ people and was promised that we will have a reserved hall. At the beginning things were going kind of okay but the food was not up to the mark at all specially for some items my guests complained that it lacks salt. After around 1 PM, I saw outsiders coming in the same hall and having lunch. Hence, the hall was not exclusively for us though we did not complain so that their business is not hurt. After around 24 25 of our guests had food, one of the main non veg dish Mutton for which we are paying such a high price, was vanished and it was replaced with chicken. When we raised the concern, an aged lady provided a small bowl of mutton to 2 of our guests. The biggest surprise came when we went to settle the payment. The hotel people told that 35 Adults and 10 12 kids (age 5 12) had taken lunch in our party. We raised a strong objection and told that only 27 Adults and 8 kids (age 5 12) had been in our party. There was a bearded guy and an aged person (with whom I had spoken few times over phone while booking the party) who started behaving very rough. We even clearly showed them the tables where outsiders came and had lunch. When they saw that it is impossible to convince us to inflate the number of our guests, with our biggest surprise, they immediately changed their stand. The aged person started saying that since we used the hall (although it was not exclusive for us) we have to pay the price of 40 persons. This was a complete shock to me since when they asked me over phone about the number of guests, I had told them that I am expecting 30 people but with kids it might go to 40. The aged guy told me that for 30 people they will give me a hall. Now, they started putting pressure on me to pay for 40 plates. It was a very insulting situation for me since all my guests were still there around and it would have looked very odd to argue in front of my guests about the plate count. I closed the chapter by paying for 40 plates. Hence, although my actual due is for 31 plates (27 adults and 8 kids half price). It's a straight loss of 9x16 (15 dollar per plate and 1 dollar for soft drinks) 144 dollar. Even the bearded guy and aged guy took an unique stand they said that they are petty servants of this restaurants and the real owner is the aged lady who already left the place when food shortage started in the evening, the lady will come back and will settle the accounts with them by asking for 40 plates. This is a complete bogus excuse. Hence, I would never go back to this place and will not recommend anyone about this place due to the clear reasons as below 1) Shortage of main food items (mutton curry) and low quality 2) Very high price (food quality not worth of 15 dollar per plate in buffet) 3) Not providing exclusive hall although had promised to provide at the beginning 4) Rude behavior 5) Exorbitant overcharging in name of Hall even when it is not being exclusively provided 6) It is now very clear that they actually had cooked lesser amount of food 7) In name of authentic bengali food, they are actually misguiding people One of the big mistake that I made was that I should have asked them to pack 9 plates of food since I am paying the price. I had a late realization about that when I was driving back home. One of the very important lesson I have learned in this entire episode is that going forward if I am arranging a party, I would never trust the hotel owner and will make a contract in their letterhead with their sign and stamp.
I don't know why this place is 4 stars. Went in for Buffet today and I have had much better Indian food. The samosas were too oily and the stuffing in it tasted weird. The main course curries were so so in taste. The gravy had too much cream in it. They had gulab jambun for sweets and it was hard as a rock. its supposed to be soft.
This is the only restaurant in the east coast that serves bengali cuisine from India. This is not your restaurant if you are looking for authentic butter chicken/ chicken tikka masala or dosa. The bengali food from Jackson Heights caters to another style that is more unique to Bangladesh. For the other variety from West Bengal this is, to my knowledge, so far the onky place in the east coast.
