Bidrage med feedbackBit quirky but I liked it a lot. Meals are cafeteria/mess hall style and I had some of the best prime rib I ever had. A very quiet place. Room was clean and basic with a working wood fireplace. Places to hike and a short walk to the rim of the volcano. History happened here and it is worth learning that history.
I highly recommend the KMC Military Camp. We had a great time. Military families these type of facilities are having a hard time surviving because of changes to non appropriated fund activities. PLEASE visit and use these facilities or they’ll be gone. We rented a two bedroom two bath with kitchen. The master bath was smaller than the guest bedroom (2 beds) with attached bathroom but who cares? It was fine! The units are old and were constructed in 1916 so manage your expectations. Your not staying at the Hilton. Also the shear environment the staff endures to maintain these historic cabins and cottages is impressive!! The unit we were in had beautiful antique door knobs and plates. COVID probably challenged the kitchen there was absolutely nothing not even salt and pepper. Probably explains why there where so many at the General Store (aka AAFES). Compared to the Air BnB we stayed at in Kona (had everything) we were a bit disappointed in that. However, it did have everything you needed to cook your food and plates/cups/utensils, but no coffee filters, for example. This is the best place from which to explore the National Park hands down. There is a small village called Volcano outside the main park that can provide some supplies if you find yourself empty and the General Store” is out. If you fly into Kona you can visit a KTA market and buy what you need or do that in Hilo. The “General Store” at the KMC closes at 1900 most days. So keep that in mind. There’s a second AAFES that has limited hours as well at Pohakuloa Training Area. I think they closed at 1300 daily. Again, pending time and route you could stop by to stock up prior to arriving KMC. Again highly recommend KMC and reach out if you have questions.
Rented a 2 bedroom. The heaters in the living room were not working, my son slept on the sofa bed complained he was cold during the night. Pleasant stay, friendly staff.
Old facilities but very generous and educational. We stayed for 5 days and its probably the best way to enjoy the volcano. We stayed in the cabins and enjoyed the campy feelbof being away from the city- literally away from the city. The staff is super friendly and helpful. Unfortunately network conditions make it hard to reach them but if they say they will call you back they really will. The tvs had more stations than expected although we didn't watch much. The grounds had everything you need and park rangers in the day. We needed flashlights 1 night and the front desk gave us some that we returned that same night. We also were charged too much and refunded without incident. I actually cannot wait to stay here again and go exploring more. We did not use the bowling alley or general store because we went to Walmart as soon as we arrived and left water for others when we left. It was amazing to wake up there every morning.
Totally recommend veterans/active duty to stay here. Very clean and renovated interiors on the cottage. There is a bar and recreation area. Paid $3.25 for a pretty good burger at the bowling aisle. For comparison, I paid $18.99 for a hamburger in Kohala last week. Super fair prices and great location.
