Weird place. Has a big ol banner out front saying don 't make us ask, wear a mask. I work as an EMT in a big city and was here for vacation so masking up is just something I do given the covid patients I interact with a lot. My group masked up, walked inside, and was immediately met with this hostile atmosphere from the patrons and bartender. The whole place got quiet and openly stared. We asked politely if we could sit outside and the bartender ignored us multiple times despite making eye contact and obviously hearing us. A patron finally spoke up and in a really hostile tone said she wouldn 't hear us cause we were wearing masks. We stepped outside to discuss options and could hear the other patrons all talking about how stupid we were for wearing masks. So we left and ate at the place next door.
In my life, up until the time I set foot in Greenwood Lake, I never realized there were entire cities in the world populated completely by police officers and fire fighters. Such a thing would not have even crossed my mind as existing. But this seems to be what Greenwood Lake is. I knew there were police bars but a police bar in a police city, which seems to be what Irish Whispers is, blew my mind. This place definitely caters to locals and looks upon hikers and vacationers, a regular feature in Greenwood Lake during the summer, askew. I guess part of this was my fault because I was on a quest to try local beer and this is definitely not the kind of place that caters to a hipster crowd. When I asked the bartender what kind of local beer they had, another patron at the bar screamed, Budweiser. Which I guess is true if local is the United States. Watching the Mets game, I drank my Budweiser in peace while listening to relatives of the bartender and local cops playing pool and the bartender singing along to the stream of Kid Rock anthems (hey, I 'm from Detroit so I know all of the lyrics too, but I 'm not singing) coming out of the jukebox. While I appreciated being ignored to a point, because I 'm not a fan of talky bartenders, but I swear I felt a cold breeze coming from behind the bar as the bartender gambled with a regular in some sort of New York Lottery game. Despite this, I had a second opportunity to be in Greenwood Lake this summer. Since this place had a patio and decent drink prices I wanted to try it out this second time. I did not even make it through the door before being told there was a private party of police officers who had reserved the bar that afternoon and I was not allowed. Somehow, I was not surprised in the slightest.
The best bar ever. Service is beyond a 5 star but there wasn't an option. Joe is number 1.
Walked in with 1 friend, left with 5 : There were some out of town hikers there and other patrons engaged with them (contrary to other reviews here . Come here alone or with a group, people make you feel comfortable. Tina the Bartender was quick and attentive. Bar food was fairly good. Open until 4am. I'll be back!
