Restaurante Carpa - Vila Nova de Gaia

Looks like a canteen! It is, all the locals go. Hors d’ oeuvres arrived and bread, careful what you eat as the main course is huge. DO NOT GO BIG. The portions are huge. We had bois bacon, which is beef steak topped with smoked bacon. Masses of scallops (cross between a crisp and a chip…. beautiful) Comes with cabbage, olive and onion concoction; very tasty and healthy but not everyone’s cup of tea. Waiter spoke no English, but never a problem. He was charming, skilled and funny. Real local character. Paid less than 40 euros and we had beers and a bottle of wine

I will advice you to go the little cantine and not in the more touristic restaurant that has the same name. The food is delicious, the waiters are very nice and it is very cheap. A fantastic taste to Portugal!

Carpa recommended by desk clerk at our hotel down the street. Food was excellent. Server said half portions are often enough for two and he was right. We split one portion of espitada and could not finish it. Prices including for wine are exceptionally reasonable and server could not have been more helpful.

When in Porto, Portugal, you may want to pay a visit to this wonderful restaurant i came upon by accident and i am not disappointed. At first glance, it does not say much but once you step into the restaurant ,you feel warm and welcome. The ambiance is cool and the food is phenomenal. We ordered grilled seafood,steak and a few other dishes.The service was good, but a little slow once the order was placed, given the several dishes we ordered, so its understood. Waiters were very attentive and professional. Prices were in the mid ranges . Good wine selection. Waite staff was knowledgeable and recommendations were very good. Very good Portuguese traditional food with bacalhau dishes. Their are also many meat dishes to choose from. Very good value for money. The plates are very big and often will do for two people. If you are in Gaia, I do recommend.
