Chateau St. John - Spartanburg

My wife and I were excited to try out this new restaurant after seeing pictures of the delicious food and new chef. We made a reservation and went on a Thursday night, finding the restaurant nearly empty. We were seated promptly and warmly welcomed, but then had to wait a few minutes for our server, who apologized for being new to the restaurant industry. The menu looked enticing, but the salads we ordered were just okay - nothing special. When our main dishes, the ducks, arrived, we were disappointed. The presentation was average and the taste was lacking. We both felt that the chef must have been having an off day. For the prices on the menu, there are definitely better options available elsewhere.

We had a wonderful evening at this lovely restaurant in Spartanburg, SC. The food and service were exceptional, the Spinach dip was delicious, and the atmosphere was stunning. Thank you for a great experience.

It is important for the staff to be trained properly. Some small details like bringing bread or crackers without being asked, inquiring about how you would like your meat or fish cooked, and asking if you would like coffee or dessert can make a big difference. We had to cancel our dessert because we had to wait at least 20 minutes for it. The atmosphere was nice and the food was good, but without experienced waitstaff, the restaurant may struggle to survive.

The food and the environment are good and the staff is friendly, but the attention to detail lacked. We ordered a salad and our hot food arrived about 2 minutes after our salad, so it had to sit on the table while we ate our salad. Nobody ever got our salad plates or our plates. When we left both plates, we still sat on the table. The potatoes were a bit too salty, but unlike the food was excellent. They were very accommodating via dividers for us at no extra cost. They took us out in time to make our theatre.

Possibly worse than when it was called Back Porch. Our waitress was clueless about the menu or beers available. We sat there for 10 minutes before anyone came to our table. My husband ordered the pork belly from the menu and received pork chops and our waitress didn't understand when we told her. They were out half of their drink options, and the food is over priced for just tasting OKAY. Several other tables were already complaining to the manager before we got a chance to. I hope this place can get it together soon, as this location and building are great for Spartanburg!
