Food is good, beer selection interesting. The vibe is a little weird but even the bathrooms were clean so 4.5 stars
Off the Leash is a great new hotdog restaurant/pub that recently opened in Sanford, replacing what was formally known as Sanford Ave Tavern. Nancy and I stopped in for a quick bite to eat after the Sofa Suds event back in November 2021. The staff here are friendly and welcoming, and the layout is inviting. We enjoyed the new vibrant and colorful interior and multiple monitors to watch the big game. Things might have changed since we came in November, but when we were here, it was counter service only, so if you know what you want, go up to the bar and order, then grab a seat, the staff will bring your food to you once ready. The specialty dogs are anywhere from $7-$10 each, and beers run between $5-$8 each. Off the Leash also offers a small selection of wine and cider to choose from. The day we dined here, the restaurant was out of 12 dogs, so we were limited to three options to choose from and decided on the Chicago Style Dog. I have always been a fan of the Chicago dog, and this one was pretty darn good; however, it was missing chopped onions and could have used more of the relish. The sweet potato fries were a bit on the limp side but were still tasty. All-in-all, we enjoyed our time here and appreciate the unique addition to the downtown area. However, I think that $7-$10 is a bit much to spend on a hotdog, especially when compared to places like Hot Dog Heaven in Orlando where you can get a dog for $3.20-$4.40 or a Basket option which includes the hot dog, fries, and one side from $5.70-$7.30. In my opinion, many locals may not spend their money here unless Off the Leash offers a package deal at a competitive price like Hot Dog Heaven in Orlando. I plan to return to Off the Leash in the future and hope they do well in downtown Sanford. If you are in the area and looking for one of the newest hot spots in town, check out Off the Leash, you might be pleasantly surprised. Even if you do not eat here, this is a great place to share conversation, a few beers, and catch the game.
