Ray's Drive Inn - San Antonio

Fantastic puffy tacos. I'm trying to make them at home since I don't live in San Antonio and of course I fall short. Update 1-2-2024 I brought my kids here while traveling and wanted to show them the original puffy tacos I was trying to copy all these years. Well I guess my memory was all roses and not reality about Ray's because the whole family likes my puffy tacos better and they are quite a bit better than Ray's. I was shocked. At $5 per taco after you add cheese, tax, and tip it was over $50 for 4 people for just tacos? Still yummy, not as yummy as I remembered, and grossly overpriced.

We visited twice in one week because our 1st experience was so good! On our 2nd trip we somehow got lucky and had the same table and waitress. Irma remembered all 4 of our special orders from 5 days prior! I highly recommend visiting and trying the puffy tacos or chicken fajita plate.

The place has a old school feel to it. I've been in San Antonio for 20 years and have never come here. Decided to try it and it did not disappoint! I will say the service seemed a bit slow. Took about 20 minutes to get seated on a Friday night. Then took another 20 minutes to get our first drink refill. Maybe 45 minutes to get our food. The puffy tacos are surprisingly good! The lettuce, tomatoes, and avacado were super fresh. The chicken puffy tacos have even more flavor than the beef ones! Great tacos!!! The enchiladas were good. The tortillas that came with the meal looked and tasted like store bought tortillas, not good especially in San Anto, but overall the food was good. We will definitely be coming back for the chicken puffy tacos!

Great place with a historical atmosphere. Mexican plate was a Tex Mex delight!

When I was preparing our trip here this was soo recommended that I was very excited to come. The service was great. Everyone serving there greeted us with a smile, and the puffy tacos where very delicious I got chicken and fajita puffy taco very good, my husband got the steak plate was very good and tasty. Was very interesting to see the old and antique unique things around the restaurant. Is a most stop in your visit to San Antonio tx.
