Bidrage med feedbackMy friend and I were looking for a place where our tour group was to meet, later in the evening. She was looking for steamed mussels. Le Fandango had introduced them. Case closed. I was looking for something that stimulated me and decided on a cold plate. Everything was delicious and washed with a few beers. We saw people coming and going. My friend's mussels were served in a huge bowl. It must have bees 40 of them, all in garlic butter sauce. She really enjoyed her. I enjoyed my record much more than I expected. The amazing thing was our waiter or I should tell the waiter. He sprinkled around the diners in and outside the restaurant. He seemed to take over all orders and serve everyone. It took a few minutes to capture his attention for our bill, but I hope he got many tips! (My friend ended with indignation at night and the next morning from all garlic.
After a long train ride from Paris, we went for a drink. The initial greeting was less than warm, but the man behind the bar became more friendly than the evening went. We enjoyed a jug of Sangria and a plate of charcuterie that... was good and plentiful. It is an old-fashioned bar in the city centre that could be a gold mine with a more friendly welcome.
They are spoiled for choice in this area, but the smallness and menu of sardines and other seafood are attractive. The waiter I suspect is probably the owner not about communicative and as someone mentioned, he reacts better if you try at least French....He warmed up as the evening progressed and was positively irradiated by the second visit. the food was good, well prepared and delicious and especially inexpensive.
Food ok but medicore, service ok but mediocre, decor mediocre. But fairly cheap, you get what you pay for.
Royalty married here and an Emperor holidayed here so St Jean de Luze was and is very special. Located at No 3 on the vibrant rue de la Republique le Fandango is a very pleasant restaurant with a nice selection of regional food and some very good...local wines. We sat outside on a glorious sunny day and really enjoyed our lunch of sardines, mussels and chips accompanied by a superb dry white Juranson wine from nearby Pau. The ambience was pleasant and the service was efficient albeit a trite surly. Very good quality/price ratio. Worth a detour.
