Midnight Kitchen - ROBERTSON

Always wanted to try this place out every time I walked pass, but never got the chance to. Finally had the chance to try and kinda had high expectations...???... Anyways.... first dish we ordered was the red claw hot spicy pot. That one was good recommended. The second dish we ordered was (I forgot the full name on the menu) Mantis prawns. Now...when you see Mantis prawns and order that dish.... you would expect to see mantis prawns. HOWEVER... we received venamei prawns instead.... really disappointed. My friend read the chinese version of their menu and she said it just stated prawns... didn't have mantis prawns anywhere in that chinese version dish name. So it was EXTREMELY misleading. We didn't bring it up to staff as we cbf...

After a couple of false starts a) one of our favourites, Nom Nom cafe in Salisbury has now been replaced by a Chinese restaurant called Phoenix House which only opens for dinner, and b) Shanghai Cuisine in Robertson Village looks like it has new ownership with nothing interesting in the menu we landed up at the Red Claw (named presumably after the cheeky looking red lobster man who adorns the sign and the crockery). Mrs Kan Do and I decided to order two of their lunch specials, fish in chilli sauce with rice and beef with stir fried noodles. The fish arrived first, followed by the rice and then the beef and noodles. I was really impressed with the huge quantities of food for just $11.80 for each dish! The food was freshly cooked and hot. The fish was cooked well with a beautiful soft texture and the flavour of the dish was reasonably good, except for the peppercorns which I didn't mind but certainly I can see people not liking. The beef fried noodles was saucy with a good texture without a lot of flavour but certainly had enough salt for my taste (I tend to like a little more salt in my food than other people and this was at the upper limit of what I like). The flavour of the noodles was helped along with some chilli oil that I asked for. Overall it was a huge meal, with freshly cooked dishes for just $23.60, so really good value for money. The flavours here won't blow anyone away but for a good, cheap eat, it satisfies. Service is pretty much the Sunnybank standard adequate.

Came across this little cafe on our way from Secret Trees (it is actually next door) so a great spot for a quick lunch with a small price tag of $10. Not a lot of vegetarian offerings so I opted for the fried rice with veg which did the trick for me as I was in a hurry. Free wifi is also a bonus

Since they changed to the new menu, it's getting a lot worse than before, as they have removed lots of good dishes : However, the green bean and chilli chicken are still the best dishes! Love them. The service there has always been TERRIBLE! It's like there is no waitress there to serve us, we have to always grab water, plates, bowls ourselves.

We didn't have any strong impression of On the Silk Road. Maybe that's my mistake for not ordering some cray fish but honestly, it was a confusing experience and when you leave a restaurant unsure of what its focus even is, there's something that can be improved in the layout, marketing and layout design.
