Made a reservation for dinner on Saturday 23 September 23 as a special birthday dinner for my Mother-in-Law. We had visited a couple of years ago and the food and atmosphere was really nice. The staff then made you feel welcome and were very attentive. However, this can 't be said about our recent visit! On arrival the female manager who was behind the desk was abrupt and cold. This somehow set the tone. After waiting for a couple of minutes we were shown to our table in the Conservatory area. It felt like we were entering a canteen. Large parties of diners (which we have no problem with) however it is not unreasonable to say that you had to shout to have a conversation. We were instantly given the menus to order food without being given a drinks menu or asked if we wanted to order drinks. We asked for a drinks menu and then ordered. Some 30 minutes later our drinks had still not arrived meanwhile we had almost finished our starters! The place felt busy but nowhere near busy enough for a 30 minute wait for 4 drinks. We then ordered a bottle of wine for the table with our main courses. This took less time to arrive however when it did the wine was deposited in an ice bucket and then we were told I will just leave this here . Here was on the floor! Meanwhile, someone thought that a Saturday dining experience would be enhanced by putting football on the TV. We persevered with our meal and one of the large parties then left. Following this it felt as if were in a furniture removal showroom as the large table was then separated, large chairs were brought in, some were taken away and all in all and whilst we tried to have our birthday meal the furniture moving went on for approximately 10 minutes (even though there was no one waiting for a table). Meanwhile, we tried to use both the Gents and Ladies toilets. To say both were filthy would be an understatement. No toilet rolls in any cubicles, cobwebs and general lack of cleanliness around the sink areas. If you use the cleanliness of a toilet as a barometer of how clean a restaurant is then this would make you think twice about eating there! It is fair to say in all our years it is difficult to recall a worse experience and we left as soon as we possibly could. We did not say anything on the evening as we hoped that it had just started poorly and would improve. We also did not want to cause a scene on what was a birthday celebration for an older lady. I can only assume that this restaurant is under new ownership or has changed hands in some form as the experience of two years ago and two days ago are literally night and day. Safe to say we will not be returning!
