You want Polish food, you head for a Polish neighborhood and Ridgewood is most definitely one. Step inside and find yourself in Eastern Europe and that is meant as a high compliment. Everything is wood, brick, leather, iron, velvet. Polish kings benevolently gaze down on you beside ancient weaponry. The staff are Polish-Americans, clearly speaking English as a second language. Polite and somewhat reserved, but very warm. You won 't be addressed as 'you guys ' which is quite refreshing. You 'll hear much Polish spoken by staff and locals. The food is simply outstanding. I 'll let the pictures do most of the talking. I 've got a 100% Polish husband from Milwaukee no less, and he proclaimed the stuffed cabbage to be just like his mother made, and the borscht and blood sausage some of the best he ever tasted in his life. And that 's saying something. We tasted many of the regular items and I loved it all. Portions were large and prices quite reasonable. My advice is to come here, come soon, and come hungry. Would definitely return.
Delicious food and great service. I am especially impressed with their steak. They also have a nice ambience with some nice portraits, beautiful curtains and real wood benches and tables.
Funny enough, I always wanted to try Polish food and now I know I actually don't like it. Came here on a Friday night and unfortunately, I must report, their food was pretty boring for my palate. Everything was bland just like some of my reviews... The only thing that I liked was their White Borscht soup. It was rich and flavorful with a slight acidic after taste. It also came with a side of whipped potatoes and sprinkled bacon bits that made it more delightful. As for their BBQ Meat Platters, it was so disgusting. Not only did it look like an absolute mess but it tasted overcooked and smelled a bit funky. Their boiled hock reminded me of a huge mangled penis [hidden link], while their grilled chicken kabob tasted dry and tough. To be honest, that BBQ dish looked more like a platter of barnyard road kill then a platter of gourmet protein. Their Strawberry Blintzes was pretty decent but their Cheese and Potato Pierogis was lacking in flavor and it didn't help enhance the taste, whatsoever, just because it was deep fried. Maybe Polish food is just not my thing, but if you like Polish food I would recommend this place as it's cleared that I don't know what Polish food should taste like and I can only compare it base on my taste bud.
For years I 've been in incredibly jealous of all the wonderful Polish options in Brooklyn, so much so that when I learned the infamous Krolewskie Jadlo #1) opened up in Ridgewood, I just had to go. It wasn 't exactly the same animal as it 's Greenpoint counterpart, but I still enjoyed it all the same. Fast forward 10 years, this Ridgewood location has closed and I mourn as always. The Ridgewood location was extremely similar decor wise, with this old rustic charm and was friendly for all walks of life, including a popular bar and lots of seating for mini groups. Food wise, they held true to their King 's Feast namesake. The food was like many Polish cuisine encounters: hearty, worthy of family style, and with plenty of variety. The meat options were plentiful and even simple things like pierogis were always fire. I especially loved the family platters, i.e. the plate for 3 or plate for 4 which were a mix of just about everything. It as massive as it sounds. The standouts for me were easily the beef goulash, hunter 's stew, stuffed cabbage, and of course, their in house kielbasa. The service was always on point and kind to me always. Kitchen was a tad slow on their orders every time I came here, it would never shock me to wait at least 35-40 minutes for food. I make it a point to come with good company so that a good time is always had. And while they closed, there is still a happy ending. The original Brooklyn location lives on and this location is offering the same things but under a new name #2). I hope the new spot is as enjoyable, if not better, than what it was before. ___________ #1) They are awesome: [hidden link] #2) Now Okrasa: [hidden link]
Love both the greenpoint and ridgewood locations! Really great pierogi (I get fried and red borscht!! Their kielbasa is yummy and so is the lard with bread. Recommend to all who want to try Polish food, coming from a Polish person : Polish older ladies work in the kitchen, which is a good sign as another reveiwer mentioned. Ambience is cute too and prices are extremely affordable.
