The Belize Zoo exceeded my expectations – they really show the diversity of Belize with the focus on education and conservation. The zoo animals are rescues of natural disasters, former victims of exotic animal trafficking, born in captivity, or rehabilitated problematic animals. The enclosures are very natural and larger than most zoos I visited. I enjoyed reading the personalized poems for every animal, and the origins as they came to the zoo. I really can't decide what animal my favorite was to see, but it's a great chance to see animals that you would rarely see differently... In the top three were the coat, tapir and of course the Jaguar. Many wild birds and lizards will also come and go out of the zoo, so keep your eyes peeled for this! The staff was very nice and the gift shop has a good selection and prices. There are also lockers to store your bags for free. My tips: bring bug spray and a zoom lens, and give yourself at least 3 hours to admire everything. If you travel by bus, time your visit by bus schedule (the zoo entrance is about 5 minutes walk from the bus stop on the highway and buses will honk when you approach, so be ready to mark them down.
