Japanese Kitchen Sakura - Pukekohe

We had been wanting to visit Sakura Kitchen for a long time. We first discovered it years ago while shopping at the nearby supermarket, but when we tried to make a reservation, they were fully booked for weeks in advance. However, after hearing many great reviews, we finally made plans to go with some friends. The entrance to the restaurant is unassuming, tucked between a pizza shop and a butcher, making it easy to overlook. There is no menu at Sakura Kitchen - the Japanese owner cooks whatever he feels like that day. The setting is small and intimate, allowing you to chat with the chef as he prepares your meal. During our visit, there were only three staff members, including the chef and two others assisting in the kitchen and serving the table. Our group of 12 was the only customers, seated at a large table that filled the entire restaurant. The chef also opens the restaurant for private dining, as he did for a friend's anniversary recently. The food was fantastic, with about 10 courses ranging from vegetables to Wagyu beef, chicken, and seafood. Each dish was beautifully presented with accompanying sauces and condiments. Despite not knowing the names of the dishes, everything was delicious. We were all quite full by the end but managed to make room for the unique green tea ice cream dessert. The restaurant is fully licensed, though the drink selection is limited. The bill came out to around $70 per person, but would have been less without alcohol. Overall, it was a great and memorable experience at Sakura Kitchen, and we look forward to returning again.

We had a wonderful time at this restaurant and the food was excellent. It was a unique experience. We celebrated a family birthday with a 16-course tasting menu that was surprisingly affordable. The talented chef engaged with us and was very entertaining. By the end of the night, it felt like he was part of our family. It was a great evening.

We had a fantastic evening celebrating our 2nd wedding anniversary at Sakura. We were pleasantly surprised to find that the entire restaurant was booked just for us, creating a cool and relaxed atmosphere. The food was superb and we highly recommend Sakura.
