Café Rouge Portsmouth

Generally very good but today tried their Black Truffle Camembert Burger (it’s 2-for-1 burgers on Wednesdays). Disappointingly the burger itself was dry and lacked taste. Cheese bacon topping was nice but I couldn’t tell whether there was any black truffle in it or not. Next time I’ll stick to one of their ‘classic’ French menu offerings.

So, I came in for desserts. Outside, I read that they serve “freshly baked” scones. I ordered that with a cappuccino. It took them a while to serve the scone. And it came looking this! As displayed in the photo. This is just the top view. Too bad I didn’t get a photo of the sides that were just BURNT! I’ve had many scones before and NONE of them looked as brown and burnt as this!!! And the manager insisted that it’s normal and if they’d baked another scone, it would still look the same. Oh My Gawd!!! Sorry, but I’m no fool. You guys be the judge. So, I ordered a Lemon Tart instead. £3+ more expensive than the scone. Is this their strategy to “upsell”?!?! Hahaha! Terrible!

We had afternoon tea here, We had a voucher but should have cost £15 each. The mini baguettes were really good, ham, camembert and a really good chicken liver pate. These were really tasty and filling. 1 fruit scone each with a pot of jam and cream. Finally a selection of small cakes. Personally I felt these were a bit of a let down, the crème brûlée was ok but the top wasn't enough carmel and the pastry was not baked enough. The filling was good though. The lemon merengue pie was also under baked. The chocolate slice was good. The service was good and it included unlimited hot drinks. Overall it was a good afternoon tea for the money just a shame about the cakes. We would go back.

Went here for tea for 2 was a Christmas gift, it was so good. Choice of sandwiches and cakes, will definitely be back.

Never been before thought we try something new, the place had a good atmosphere and felt very comfortable. Food service was excellent would come again as it's the only one close to where we live nearly 59miles away .
