Excellent traditional cuisine. ... very substance and little talk.
Tried to be clever by going away from the cathedral to find lunch. Encouraged by Tripadvisor sign we sat down. A 40 minute wait for a 12 Euro pizza with a burnt base and very little topping. Credit card machine not working, and owner chef had no change. Eventually got 5 euros deducted from the bill. Ask for tour sign back !
The pizza was ok, but rather pricey compared to other places. Washing of the pavement definately needed, otherwise the outside places could have been nice. The place did not match the prices.
Orvieto is a typical medieval town of narrow streets and high buildings. Consequently the number of pavement cafes with tables in the sun, out of season, is few we saw 2, and on the first sunny day after 4 days of rain we wanted lunch in the sun. We paid the price! Checking menus as we walked around Orvieto, most cafes had a pizza menu starting at 6 euros (some as low as 4.50 euros) but all had tables in the shade. When we came across Caffe Cornelio, with just 2 tables outside, in full sun, we sat down, naively assuming that their prices would be similar to what we'd seen, as it had no special features, or location. A basic pizza Margherita was 10 euros, 40cl lagers 7 euros each, plus 4 euros cover charge, plus 10% service on top! Nothing wrong with the pizza, the drinks or the service, it was just an ordinary lunch in a very ordinary location but at nearly twice the price we'd paid in much better places.
