Cafe Mayu - Ollantaytambo

I couldn't believe that the best hot chocolate I found in Peru was at a train station, but it's true. They serve it to you without sugar in the drink, and then give you the sugar on the side so you can sweeten it as...you like. We stopped here when we had some time before our train to Machu Picchu, but it was so good we got some to go when we came back.

If I could give this 6 stars, I would. We happened upon this coffee shop after doing the farm tour and then came back at least 3 times while in the area. My husband really enjoyed their lattes and I loved their gluten-free chocolate torte...(crust made out of cashews). Have I mentioned how much I loved their GF torte? I wish it was served in the US. Sometimes a couple comforts make all the difference. Service was excellent and we enjoyed taking our drinks/treat into their inner courtyard among the trees and flowers, away from the train deck.

We were on our way to Machu Picchu by train and needed a cup of strong coffee before we embarked. The staff on duty so early did not understand what we ordered and I ended up with a very foamy, cold and very expensive cuppachino,...something I don’t usually drink. If you can get a good cup of coffee elsewhere get it as you will pay nearly three times more for your cup here.

Best coffee in Peru. It is organic, hand-selected, and roasted on site. You cannot go wrong. I highly recommend the mocha, which is made with local dark chocolate and not the horrible over-sugared cocoa that one gets in the United States establishments like Starbucks. This...is real coffee. Real chocolate. Enjoy it!
