Wei's Super Buffet - Olathe

It may be somewhat silly to review a Chinese buffet, but since most of them are bad to mediocre, I’m going to say a few words on behalf of Wei’s Super Buffet. Wei’s is new to Olathe, taking over what was most recently a pretty decent Mexican food joint, La Mesa. Wei’s is clean and brightly decorated. The buffet features three long steam tables with creative and diverse dishes. From standard sweet sour chicken to a fairly clever walnut shrimp, there is an impressive array of both familiar and interesting food. A unique twist on the buffet is a Mongolian barbeque set-up tucked in the corner of the food area. Though not extensive, there were seven or eight meats and a dozen or so vegetables plus six or so sauce options. It’s a remarkable addition to the buffet. There is also sushi bar with a fairly diverse choice. The obligatory veggie, fruit, and baked goods assortment is above average. A soft-serve ice cream automaton offers a sweet treat at the end of the meal. Perhaps most surprising is the price. In March 2010, lunch is $6.99 and dinner is $8.99 (not including drink). That’s remarkable for the diversity and quality of the buffet. We can all agree that this is not P.F. Chang’s or Bo Ling’s, but for suburban family dining, Wei’s is well above its peers and worth a visit.
