Restaurant Il Giardino - Oberaudorf

This is our Italian restaurant and we eat there about every second week. I can understand why some reviews are negative, because the waitress is not the It is so wonderful that you are here! Guy. But she's really funny, great with kids and nice... when you are. Hey, she's a real person, not a service robot! But, above all, the food is really good and got great feedback from the Italians I took there. For me, what counts more, because the grin on my face after dinner is more important than the smile on the waiter's face.

Since 1971 I visited Oberaudorf, but visited this restaurant only once or twice over the years, only because it is a little pulled out of my eyes and tends to be overlooked. During our visit at the end of August this year, we decided that we must do this right and see it again. What a mistake! Absolutely terrible service – and the rude waitress (owner? I've ever heard. Other guests were also treated in the same way. I could write a book about the 2 hours plus time that we were there, but I don't have enough space to endure any rude comment and insult that we can bear from this woman. My daughter, who speaks fluent German, understood every word she said, including her comment that we were “crazed”! The time to get food and drink was also completely inappropriate – 35 minutes for drinks arrive and then another hour for food. The small area of the playground was uncertain – nets that grow freely and also two large wooden piles (with a pointed end were spread against the climbing frame and at one point some larger children took up these and tried to throw them like taxi drivers! Why didn't we leave? Good question – we should have done it – but it is not always easy if you have small children with you, and we have made the wrong choice and put it out. I won a star because the food was pretty good when it finally arrived. Oberaudorf has many good restaurants with good food and equally important – friendly, helpful and welcoming staff. We will never visit this place again.

I have been visiting Oberaudorf for holidays since 1971 but only visited this restaurant once or twice over the years, simply because it is tucked away a little out of sight and tends to get overlooked. On our visit in late August this year, we decided we must put this right and re-visit. What a mistake!! Absolutely terrible service – and the rudest waitress (owner?) I have ever experienced. Other guests were also treated in the same manner. I could write a book about the 2 hours plus time we were there , but I wouldn’t have enough space to detail every rude comment and insult that we had to endure from this woman. My daughter who speaks fluent German understood every word that she said, including her comment that we were “rabble”! The length of time to receive food and drink was also totally unreasonable – 35 mins for drinks to arrive and then another hour for the food. The small area of playground was unsafe – nettles growing freely and also two large wooden stakes (with a pointed end) were propped up against the climbing frame and at one point some larger children picked these up and were trying to toss them like cabers! Why didn’t we leave? Good question – we should have done – but its not always easy when you have small children with you, and we made the wrong choice and stuck it out. I have grudgingly awarded one star as the food was quite good when it eventually arrived. Oberaudorf has many fine restaurants with good food and just as importantly – friendly, helpful and welcoming staff. We will never visit this place again.
