An impromptu stop on the way back from my son's Karate class- driven by a sudden urge of my son to eat fish n chips at English Bay Fish & Chips. We had seen this place many a times but never stepped inside. Today - we just had to. As we entered I found the layout a little confusing as I have so got used to the idea of restaurants maximizing their space. Here was a old style layout with wide path leading to a separate pick up area and a smaller but cozy dinning area. Most of the patrons were seniors , nicely dressed for dinner. The tables were old style with gingham tablecloths and glass on top. The most interesting aspect of this place was that no one was talking on their phones or acting like zombies watching their smart phones. Everyone was having a conversation. It made me put my phone away and not take any calls. The menu had a great choice of fish from Haddock to Cod to Shrimps. We ordered the following:Seafood Soup: delicious and quite a large potion. It was similar to clam chowder but much lighter. I only wish they had either served or suggested some hot dinner rolls with. Haddock and fries: we ordered it in traditional batter. The fish potion was smaller than expected but the fish was "Haddock" and not the cheaper "Pollock" - so I didn't mind. The fish itself was not as fresh (and I don't mean it was stale) but then again we don't have a sea near Toronto. The chips were not as hot as I would have liked it to be but not bad. They offered tartar sauce and ketchup with it. I would have preferred some vinegar. We didn't order any dessert but they did look good and tempting. This place is not cheap for a fish and chips place but hey - for me sometimes the quality is better than quantity.
There are a couple of good fish and chip places in Oakville. So far my favourite is English Bay fish and chips. We did eat in one time but that was many years ago. These days we do take away. The fish is allows ready when we arrive (they do the chips right when u get there). Fish is tasty and fresh. Fries and onions rings are generous and delicious. We get one fry for the 4 of us as the portions are large..Whether you dine in or take away well worth trying out.
For those unfamiliar with Oakville, it is a town known for being toney. The Maple Grove neighbourhood here is no exception. So to discover a comfy little restaurant in one of its malls, one with such a reasonable price point, is a real find. The food and service were very good, so we will be back for sure. Check out the fotos en route to the washrooms---a collage of shots taken of big catches including one from Seward, Alaska that will blow your mind! *Tip: if like us, you are hard of hearing and prefer a quieter weekend seating in English Bay, try coming at opening time on Saturday. I am done. The end.
I was back for the rsvp Lobster Dinner and it was excellent, our tablewas waiting for us, our server was so pleasant all in all a most wonderful treat of Lobster, fries, slaw, roll and carmel ice cream.I introduced myself to the owner Mark to let him know that I am Jersey 905 and that I have only good things to say about his place in Mississagua on Dundas.
