Penny's Place - Oak Lawn

Update: Since 2019 I've had alot better luck in there. Probably right place right time, but still I'm happy my luck has changed there. Good people from the hosts to the fellow gamblers. Happy gaming everyone!!!

Worst place to play they don't even offer a drink only money

We stayed overnight in the Travel Lodge behind the diner, and they gave us a voucher for breakfast the next morning. We figured that the kids were tired, so we could eat quick and then walk back to our room and decided to eat dinner there. Our waitress was our server, cook and busser as well. I ordered the roasted turkey plate and was told that they didn't have any gravy except brown gravy. I told her that was fine and ordered mixed vegetables and mashed potatoes. She then came back and told me that they had NO gravy what so ever. I figured, eh less calories for me, that will be ok. Then she came back and said they didn't even have any mixed vegetables, but she held up a bag of corn and said she had that. Sure, why not. Corn was placed in microwave and the cooking commenced! My mashed potatoes tasted like nursing home mashed potatoes and the chicken tenders my 4 year old got weren't very tasty either. My 4 year old will eat anything, he's a tiny garbage disposal and he was not having any of those tenders. Being as she was running it herself, and other tables came in, she never returned to give refills or drop check. It was almost 10 pm and she said she'd been there since 5 am. Figured we would have gotten a small discount on my meal being as there wasn't any gravy or vegetables I ordered but nope. Full price. Came back the next morning and our waitress from the previous night was already back, but she had help this time. We got to watch the biscuits for my husbands biscuits and gravy get removed from the freezer, cut in half and microwaved. My 10 year old cinnamon roll get microwaved, then left in the microwave through the cook microwaving more orders with the cinnamon roll still chilling in there. We also found out that they have charged our debit card twice for dinner, so now we are waiting to see if that goes through or not. Pros- Waitress was honest about wait times due to her being only worker and did her best. Cons- Prep team needs to actually prep things for her. I also think they need to use the microwave a little less, and hire that poor woman some help.

Super fun place!! And the typical diner food, burger, fries, tots, onion rings, handmade milkshakes were exceptional! Morgan was running the diner during our visit her friendliness attentiveness was above beyond! Great place to eat, even better place for a Family Fun Retro experience!!

4 years ago when we moved here it was the first place we felt welcome and at the same time at home. Only place that we have went, restaurant wise that we feel like we are welcome. Thank you to the staff and manager y'all are the best, food is great too!
