I went in here alone at around 11am on a weekday. It was empty save for some men day drinking brewskis and staring at me. I was scared but stayed out of anxiety. So glad I did. Best meal of my life. Pretty sure the chef makes everything fresh, which makes sense because my food was piping hot and literal perfection. Chef was grumpy, but I would be too if I were making everything myself. Waitress was lovely. Y'all, I would risk my life for this food. Delicious. But definitely don't go alone!
As a mid-50's lifelong Torontonian, entering The Barn on Queen West is the ultimate time machine experience, no interior design work to speak of, no wifi, just magnificent all-day breakfast and old-school banquet burgers, served up by Chris the owner/chef who's been running the joint since forever. Advice: if you're a bit tired of burgers, order their famous clubhouse sandwich with real (not processed) turkey, best in the city.
A diner is a comfortable place you go to get good fresh, inexpensive staples of North American cuisine such as hamburgers, fries, breakfast, sandwiches, poutine, etc. The Barn Restaurant exemplifies this in a clean environment with attentive friendly service. When the cook is not making a meal he's cleaning his grill and kitchen. The over-easy eggs have been made perfectly each time I have gone in and ordered them. The French toast rivalled any bistro pub and restaurants minus the exorbitant pricing. The shake was a notch up from a home made version in that I don't know how they got it that good. When you simply want to feel satisfied by some staple North American food fair and not feeling the need to pay bistro or pub restaurant pricing drop into the Barn Restaurant.
The food is great, portions and price are both reasonable, and the owners are the best! We've been visiting this place for 30 years and it never disappoints! 10/10 would recommend!
