Thai Square - Newcastle

Have eaten here 3 times over the last couple of months, both lunch and dinner. All meals have been tasty, large portions and great value, although a little pricey. Staff and very friendly and attentive. Would highly recommend.

On a cold Newcastle winter Monday night the quiet warmth of Thai Square at the harbour in Newcastle stood out. The warmth came from the staff, the simple surroundings and the menu. Please don't let me confuse you with thoughts of fine Thai dining, think more simple food choices of Thai favourites nicely presented for a reasonable price. The drinks menu is simple too with a range of piccolo reds and whites to suit the lone diner or lone wine drinker. I had a good feeling about this place and had already started writing a positive review. Not in the excellent category but in the very good. Good value for money etc. I had two chef specials; prawn spring rolls (a prawn cooked in spring roll pastry). It was crispy and crunchy and teamed with a simple dipping sauce. The texture was good, but it could have been any protein at all. I could not taste prawn. Then came the pork belly and Chinese broccoli. I started with a few mouthfuls of the Chinese broccoli. Lovely crunch, great green coloration and great fresh flavour accentuated by chilli at a level I really like. Mushrooms next. Equally lovely. Then the pork. First piece was that lovely combination of crispy rind and succulent meat. A few pieces of pork in and I found my first dry stringy over cooked morsel. Unfortunately, they comprised more than half the dish. The value equation had changed. Simple was not done well from a sample of two dishes. Unfortunately, I won't be back to test out other menu items as there are too many alternatives nearby.

Food was good. Service was good to start with but I had to wait for the waitress to get her head out of her mobile phone so I could ask for the desserts menu. Dessert was definitely the highlight of the meal.

Stopped here for a bite to eat. Really yummy dishes on the menu. Staff were good and value for money.

Greeted by the most friendly staff. Seated efficiently with plenty of room for a large group (13) orders taken patiently and absolutely delicious food arrived promptly. Also catered for nut allergies and vegetarians. We would be happy to eat here every night of the week. Portions were also generous.
