Bidrage med feedbackEven my sweetest of sweet teeth had had enough of the sugary pancake breakfasts I 'd been eating throughout our trip, so I homed in on the pan con tomate at the Morri Street Cafe for a savory breakfast refresher and quickly fell in love. This is your dish if you aren 't an egg person but still want something savory and complex, but there are plenty of other great options too. The Morri Street Cafe was spacious, low-key, and perfect for either a quick grab-and-go or a more leisurely morning wake up.
Sadly it is closed so we went up the street to Lambretta's for a delicious brunch. The next day we had a great brunch at Deville which was excellent but in a different part of town.
On our drive back to Christchurch we stopped here after many recommendations from travel books. Morrison Street Cafe is a low-key, simply decorated cafe that caters more to the stomach than the eyes. Touted as more of a locals spot, there is a community board on the wall and the artwork on the wall is often for sale. When there is a gap in available artwork and the walls are bare, the space can get particularly loud, especially with young children and groups of people dining. The service is still pretty efficient despite the crowds. We had a trim flat white, an Americano, the eggs Benedict with local bacon and the salted caramel strawberry pancakes. The eggs benedict was spot on perfection with an incredible light but well-prepared hollandaise to top. The eggs were cooked just right and the bacon had a slight crisp to the edges. The eggs Benedict came heaped with spinach and chives which added a great flavor and added touch of healthiness on top of the soft bagel the Benedict was served on. Needless to say, the plate was licked clean. The pancakes were made with a wholemeal batter and were extremely fluffy. The pancakes were topped with fresh strawberries and a rhubarb compote that was bright, tart and totally complemented the salted caramel sauce that was served in lieu of syrup. If you've never had pancakes with caramel sauce, you must try it here. I had my dish served with yoghurt but cream is also an option. The prices are reasonable and the service is quick and friendly. If you're stopping in Nelson, you absolutely must find your way over to Morrison Street Cafe.
While staying in Nelson we wanted to find a place for a quick breakfast before heading over to Abel Tasman to get some nice walks in. Initially we planned to just grab some coffee, tea, a muffin and go but were pleasantly surprised after we decided to sit down and have a full breakfast. The servers were super friendly and accommodating. The whole dining room and cafe is very open and decorated beautifully. There are about 10 tables in the back seating anywhere from 2 to 6 7 people. Breakfast is served until 2:30 and lunch menu starts at 11AM, so people who fail at timing like myself be at ease. Before anything, I have to say how nice it is that pretty much every restaurant/cafe in NZ seems to bring water by default. Not something that is so uniformly practiced in the states and I love it. I ordered a long macchiato and when the barista accidentally brought a short, she quickly went back and brought the proper thing. NBD. My wife had special breakfast tea and there was enough for the two of us : The bacon and blueberry pancakes were delicious with two huge pieces of back paired with two pancakes which held their form pretty well despite being 50% blueberry. Went perfectly with the side of whipped cream. My wife had poached eggs on ciabatta an improvisation of one of their menu items containing ingredients she doesn't like which they were glad to accommodate. All in all the whole experience lasted 30 minutes but I didn't feel rushed at all. We're now fully fed and ready to go into the beautiful NZ wilderness. Would absolutely come back and I highly recommend Morrison Street Cafe to anybody stopping through Nelson.
