Alpenhaus - Montréal

I wish i could eat at this place every day of the year but due to our hot summers Ive decided its a fall and winter spot.

This authentic German-Austrian-Swiss restaurant has been around for 50 years! Yep, 50 years.

It's my own faultI should have read more reviewsThis place is very very overpriced The food is a mess.

There were mixed reviews so we weren't quite sure what to expect. What we found was polite great service, good swiss/german food, a playful interior, affordable wine selection and overall great meal

In Montreal last month for the Grand Prix, no visit would be complete without a stop at Alpenhaus. Getting there a little later in the evening than usual this year, around 8pm, we were sat quickly. We were served by Marcel who quickly and informatively gave us a run down on the available beer selection, I opted for a Stiegl. I've been visiting Alpenhaus annually for some 19 years, they always have a great selection of imported beer including often a good Swiss option and selections from Austria, Germany, etc. I like ordering beer than follows the Bavarian Purity Law, too many of the North American swill have genetically modified corn syrup to sweeten them, no thanks. Beer's been done right for hundreds of years, and it didn't use corn syrup!Mmm, Stiegl, so good. Swiss fondue - piping hot, delicious to the last drop way after the last piece of bread that you'll be fighting your friends for the opportunity to scrape the pot with your fingers over.Escargots - the most fluffy, light, whipped, garlicky butter adorn tasty snail morsels...once again, this dish will go back to the kitchen looking like it's already gone through the dishwasher - the butter is smucking fantastich!!!Roast Rack of Lamb - I get mine medium rare, you will gnaw it down to the bone! Served with a delicious potato rosti (or other choices, but mine is the rosti)Had a bottle of wine this year, delicious creme brulee to finish, absolutely stuff to the tats but well worth it.Thank you to Derrick and Marcel and all the folks behind the scenes at Alpenhaus for always making our dreams come true every year we visit, we will be back in 2018 for sure.
