Great food and drinks in a renewed environment, tavern and village. Off the beaten path but well worth the kilometers. We were there off season so we had the place's owner to ourselves and were treated to a guide book worth of information about the place, village and region.
We (a family of five) came across the Taberna by chance and were made to feel very welcome by the host who brought us olives and invited us to sit upstairs in the interesting comfortable room which had many interesting art pieces. She spoke excellent english which is just as well as our Portugese is non existent. And a few days later, she rescued us. We had got lost on a walk and even though the taverna was closed, she and her partner drove us all back to our accommodation. She pointed out interesting things on the car drive and made recommendations of things we should see in Porto. This was an amazing experience- to be treated so kindly by strangers. So go to the Taverna for a really nice place to have a drink and to meet the wonderful owners.
Taberna Terra Celta is a cafe/bar/restaurant in a lovely old building in the heart of Pitoes das Junias village the highest in Portugal. The owners, Anita and Bruno, are amazingly helpful and friendly. They helped me find interesting walks, find accommodation with a local family, and even gave me a lift when i got stuck. The Taberna itself sells good coffee, juices, food and drink, and also delicious home made jams. It has a large real fire and an interesting selection of historical objects from the area.
If you are looking forward to sit in a typical tavern and enjoy the cultural atmosphere of the region, you must go to this place. There you will find the owner Bruno that will receive you as a family member and give you some great tips about what to do, see and eat in the surrounding area. I'll definitely return there!
