Bombay Sweets is easily one of the best loved vegetarian restaurants in Milwaukee. They have a large pure-veg menu that features appetizers (man, I miss the aloo tikka! , main dishes, breads, and desserts. They have a large counter where you can buy dried nuts, snack mixes and sweets in bulk to take home. Every time I've been there it's been the same adorable, older women running the kitchen and taking orders (sometimes they seem a little crabby but I would be too if I worked everyday . While it's pure-veg you do have to watch out for dairy. Many of the entrees come with yogurt but if you ask for it to be left off they usually will give you double the main dish. This may sound odd but it's because of the types of plates: disposable picnic-style trays that have one large area for rice and the two smaller areas for sides. This, of course, is the main detraction of Bombay Sweets. Everything is served on styrofoam plates and cups and plastic utensils bu they have a self-serve water cooler so you can bring your own cups, or utensils for that matter. Also, its bright florescent lighting, mirror covered walls, and general school cafeteria atmosphere makes it a little odd but the food is so good and cheap that it's totally worth it. If only they'd get rid of the plastic utensils! P.S. They accept cash and credit cards.
The food was average, with the desserts being the highlight in terms of taste. We tried the Samosas and Vegetarian Thali- the Thali was a letdown, with low-quality food. I wouldn't suggest ordering the Thali here, as it's not worth the money. The staff seemed slow and disorganized, possibly due to it being a family-run business with a lack of proper management. The restroom was acceptable, though not the cleanest. Overall, I wouldn't recommend this restaurant for Indian cuisine.
The food at this restaurant was not up to par. I asked for cutlery which was never delivered, and the complimentary rice portion was much larger than the curry portion. The Dal Makhni had no flavor, and the serving sizes were too small. Don't be misled by the prices as they only serve small cups, not large ones. The lemon rice was filled with raw mustard seeds, which gave it an odd taste. Overall, the food was below average and I won't be ordering from here again.
I stopped at this restaurant on a whim in the morning and was pleasantly surprised by the variety of vegetarian options on the menu. I ordered the bhel poori chat and masala dosa, both of which were delicious. The masala tea was also excellent and they offer a great selection of vegetarian dishes. I even took some authentic Indian sweets home with me, which were mouth watering and delicious. I will definitely make a point to stop here again next time I am in Milwaukee.
