Bunyip Cafe - Melbourne

I have read all the reviews and thought some were a bit harsh. Sure the wait staff need a bit of training but to be honest we found the coffee very good and looking at the plates of breakfast going past makes us want to return.Nice to sit outside in the sun and watch the coming and goings of the market across the road.

It was my second time in this cosy restaurant. The first time, two months ago I enjoyed a nice cup of coffee and a muffin. The service was quick and friendly.Yesterday my pancakes were delicious, and coffee excellent, the staff is very nice.The over Peter is a charming person and makes you feel welcome.This place is dogs friendly, big plus in a busy area like South Melbourne.I will be back for sure :)

It was the first time and it will be the last. The food offerings are basic and a little overpriced to be honest. I had pancakes which were raw in places which is unacceptable. Thankfully the fruit and yoghurt which accompanied them was very tasty. My partner had the "Brekkie Melt" which he described as uninspiring and something I could have made at home far cheaper. The staff are obviously backpackers which is great but they have little hospitality knowledge. I was asked how my meal was and I said the pancake was raw in places. It was taken away and scrapped into the bin with no mention to kitchen staff of my dissatisfaction. This is unsatisfactory in my opinion but I will not go back again so no need for me to worry.

We wandered into this cafe accidentally for brunch. It's decor is quirky but without any clear direction and the menu and the service likewise. The food we had wasn't bad - just pretty basic. Given all the other choices in the area, we won't be going back.

Some places can do retro real well and some places just look tired and dated. Bunyip Cafe looks tired. Backpacker staff, a large menu lacking quality resulted in an uninspiring breakfast. Great location and plenty of competition nearby should motivate a better quality cafe. My brekkie melt was home cooking quality (not good home cooking either) and the wife's pancakes were underdone. Who under cooks pancakes? Fail.
