Smolik's Smokehouse -b-q - Mathis

We were on our way to Corpus and decided to go a little out of the way to get our first stamp on our Top 50 BBQ Tour. We didn't go to the spot along I37....we went to the original downtown. We definitely were not disappointed!! We ordered half a pound of fatty brisket, half a pound of jalapeño cheese sausage and just one pork rib for good measure. When the beautiful whole brisket was pulled out and she cut the end piece off and proceeded to slice it up, Lisa chimed in and asked for the end piece also. What a great call!! The bark was amazing! The fat was rendered down perfectly ....like meat jello!!! The sausage was a coarse ground with chunks of cheese and had a great flavor with light touch of heat at the end. The rib was very good. I'm not a sweet tasting BBQ guy but this had just a tiny hint of sweetness on the back end which was excellent! Had a side of mac and cheese (super cheesy! and fried okra to round it all of. Just wish I would have gotten a Big Red! This was a great first stop....but it definitely will not be our last at this place!

Soooooo worth the stop and judging by amount of farm animal life in the area, I can see why they were able to serve up such hearty portions at the prices they offer. Def worth spending about $5-10 more here than at a boring franchise fast food spot on the way to and/or back from your beach visit. I'm now in a food coma. Try the braised cabbage. So yummy!!

We love it here! It's a bit a drive from Alice, TX, but so worth the drive!! Great food! Great service!

Leary of most so called award winning Barbeque places, I 'm so glad we took a chance on this restaurant. We are on a low carb diet and it 's often difficult to find veggies to go with the meat. Not here! Plenty of options and everything was amazing. Friendly people and great service! Thank you for an enjoyable dining experience.

Wonderful place to eat. Great BBQ. Even grandkids ate well. Mike and Gail Smolik are friends of ours. This is the one place that we have had BBQ and liked it. Other places the BBQ is tasteless. Not here !!! Try it, you won't be disappointed.
