The Mezzanine Restaurant is good for eating in either prior or after a performance at the National especially in the winter! You don't have to brave the elements at all going from the underground car park straight up to the complex. The food comes very quickly (sometimes too quickly! and will certainly get you to your seat without any worries and is ok most of the time, although not brilliant. Service very efficient, but initially it can seem a little unfriendly on arrival. Has a nice view of the river although not one of the best around. Vegetables ordered separately and are tiny (as is often the case . Good selection of wines.
We decided to eat here for convenience as we were seeing a production at the NT. I get that service needs to be prompt in a theatre restaurant but we had finished in an hour and had an hour to spare. Not good when paying those prices. Felt pretty rushed and it was totally unnecessary. Shame.
You don't normally expect a really good meal in a theatre restaurant. Well, we had one here. The table d'hote lunch was perfectly cooked and perfectly presented. My wife and I both had cream of onion soup, with a Welsh Rarebit crouton, followed by, in my case, goujons of plaice with lovely chips, while my wife had duck breast, not too rare but certainly not overdone. She did not leave a morsel! We didn't bother with puddings. I had two glasses of wine, my wife one. I also had a good filter coffee. The cost for all this? Less than £60. The service was good and we left the Mezzanine in plenty of time for the 2.15pm performance in the adjacent theatre. Well done, the Royal National Theatre.
As we were at the National to see a show then this place was very convenient, especially on a cold December night when we didn't want to be traipsing around the South Bank looking for a decent resaurant. The service was prompt, bearing in mind that the place was packed with pre-theatre diners all arriving at about the same time: prompt and efficient, but not overwelcoming. The meal was fine but not exceptional. The price, well you can check the menu on line and see for yourself. Not particularly good value for money really. Would I recommend the Mezzanine, or go again myself? Yes, but only if in the National for a show, otherwise there are plenty of better choices around.
