We wanted to eat here in a favorite panoramic restaurant just to find it closed for the great renovation. Waldgrill, just a short walk away, turned out to be a good alternative, especially during the pumpkin week, with Vienna's favorite case ingredient in dishes both savory...and sweet, and a good amount of culinary competition for the best pumpkin whatever. We arrived early, so got the full attention of the waitress and the cook, also when others began to accompany us. The ambience of the restaurant was simple and yet charming, something like a cross between a cozy local pub and a farm inn. The food was fresh, delicious and very full, served in large portions at very modest prices. It seemed to be a few regulars while we were there, as our server welcomed many with names. We took that as a good sign. We enjoyed two large plates pumpkin cream soup/creamie pumpkin soup (a seasonal specialty here), followed by hearty nets: beef with onions and dumplings, grilled chicken with pumpkin ragout and parsley potatoes, and we ordered some good local branched wine. For dessert we ordered sinful sweet, belly Kaiserschmarrn. If you have never heard of it, this is a large plate of caramelized pancake chefs with rum-soaked raisins, stuffed with fruit (usually plums or cherry) or canned, and sprinkled with powdered sugar. It is named for Emperor Franz Josef I and can be found in most countries formerly part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. It is a booklet of Viennese cuisine, sometimes served as a main course. You have to try to believe it. Service was good, but slowed down, as the courses progressed by the arrival of more diners. But it was always friendly, and in such a pleasant atmosphere we really have to wait for the later dishes to get on our table. It is very easy to come here, especially if you are planning to visit picturesque Grinzing or continue to Kahlenberg, high in the Vienna forests. For public transport you can catch the 38 tram of Schottentor, which ends at Grinzing. From there, Bus 38A leads you to Kahlenberg, with a stop directly at Cobenzl, just a few steps from the Waldgrill. During the high season, the bus can really be overcrowded, but you're not so far: only after Cobenzl. It is 3 stops from Grinzing and you will know that you are there when you are in a parking lot with a bus protection after a steep, very windy ascent. The food here ensures a very pleasant interlude when exploring the Viennese forest, especially during the autumn holiday season. Hiking trails go from the right near the restaurant, so it is a good choice if you start or finish a hike. There is also a small farm practically over the street, to see and learn living animals for children, a program sponsored by the Department of Forestry and Agriculture. It adds to a beautiful day. Recommended.
