I gave a negative review last night after several missteps with our dinner but am adjusting that today as the food and beverage director and manager on duty this morning were very helpful and understanding. The restaurant was overwhelmed last night with a NYE crowd which led to our issues but, based on the management’s response today, I am satisfied and understand.
Based on reviews, we picked Calusa for a special dinner during our family trip to Key Largo. We found out after being seated that the New Year’s Eve dinner was prix fixe, and decided to go for it even though quite pricey. Everything was going well and we were enjoying our time together until we waited almost 30 min for our main course. When it came, the grouper was dry as a bone, filet overdone and room temp, lobster was rubbery. It took another 10 minutes to share our disappointment with our waiter, and then another 15 minutes before the manager came to our table. By then, another table near us had left due to the lack of service. During this time, we did not see our waiter or anyone we could flag down for water or a drink. The manager apologized (not super interested in our situation)and offered us a 20% discount a free bottle of wine we declined the wine and asked for dessert so we could finish up. She brought the wine anyhow its retail value was $10. Our waiter finally returned another 5 10 minutes gone by. When we asked for our check, which took even more time, it was for another table. The next check didn’t reflect the discount, so we waited yet again for the final bill. Needless to say, we won’t be visiting or recommending Calusa. So very disappointed with our experience.
We showed up for our reservation and only after we were seated did we learn that it was a special pre fix menu and it was $175/person. Surprise! We were not happy and the food wasn't even that interesting. Then they sat a table of 10 with 3 screaming children right next to us (even though there were plenty of other places for them to sit). I won't forget this experience for quite a while. The sunset view is amazing.
Our service was not good. We asked for the kids pancakes as soon as possible but that did not happen. Coffee came after 10 min but cappuccino s took 25 min. Food took close to 40 minutes and when we asked for a little more balsamic vinegar it took them 20 min to bring us vinaigrette. Never received our orange juice. We did comment to manager and she apologized and made no excuses. She caught us on the way out and adjusted the bill which was appreciated but we had our daughter and her family from out of town and we had wanted to give them a nice breakfast experience. Really would have wished it went better.
