Terrible service, poor coffee and overpriced food. I would recommend crossing the road to El Beso or Harvest
I love view street in Bendigo, its so pretty and a lot of the cafes are gems. Basement on view was no exception from this. The food was great, I had the souvlaki (first one ever) and thoroughly enjoyed it. My husband had the same but went all out on one of their $15 milk shakes with all the works. He being a massive sweet tooth looked like a kid in a candy shop when it arrived. Service is really top notch. Space is a bit cramped but that adds to the charm.
Staff rudely told us before we were even seated (on time for our 12:15pm booking) that we had to be out by 2pm. Not a problem, but no mention of it when I booked. We ordered at the register, as required. Having confirmed that we were a table of six (they entered the table number) we then proceeded to order three soups and six mains. Didn't expect to have to state that the soups were for entree. Mains started arriving before soup. We said that we'd like the soups as entree and could the mains please be kept warm. Someone from the kitchen came to tell us (rudely) that, "we have a lot of dockets in there and we don't have space to keep your meals warm so they will all be delivered now". Soup was apparently good. I'd ordered a lamb souvlaki which was very poor. Stupidly we also ordered coffee and cakes... coffees delivered one or two at a time, punctuated by large gaps. Last coffee came and it was all, "Is that all you're waiting on guys?" Actually no, an earl grey tea. After some minutes the tea was delivered. Before I'd drunk a third of a cup (and I drink my beverages scaldingly hot), someone came (at 1:50pm) to say the 2pm party had arrived and asked us to leave. The food was ordinary at best and the service outrageous. I have privately contacted the venue to say I'd be leaving a poor review and to say I'm happy to take a call to explain the issues, and provided my mobile number. There are plenty of good places to eat in Bendigo so I suggest you don't eat here.
Not sure what to think. Sort of French decor meets Old Bendigo in a basement. Service a little slow, food average and the coffee so luke warm it had to be drunk immediately. Given the plethora of good cafes in the area it would not get my reccommendation to visitors.
