Bidrage med feedbackIf you are looking for a trendy and modern coffee house experience, this is not the place for you. However, if you prefer home-cooked meals and friendly service, you will enjoy dining at this restaurant. We tried the Steak Pie with creamed potatoes and peas and the homemade cottage pie, both of which were delicious. The waitress who served us was very friendly and provided excellent service. Although the outside view may not be the most attractive, as locals who frequently visit Waterlooville library, this charming eatery will likely become a regular spot for us "wrinklies".
A bow window looks out on to a pedestrian area of an irredeemably dull town which has one foot still in the sixties. The window is lined with seating of no apparent use it looks as though the restaurant has been converted from something. The windowsill has ornaments which might have belonged to your grandmother if your grandmother is 140. I am instinctively suspicious of any restaurant where the 'specials ' are simply outtakes from the menu and where the waiter or waitress is incapable of developing a simple shorthand which could easily be understood in the kitchen. There is something of the Royston Vasey about The Butlers Pantry. There were other people there, regulars I suspect, but not in such numbers to challenge the capacity of the waitress even in longhand or of the one person in the kitchen. The food was hot and adequate but entirely unexciting and not, strictly speaking, freshly prepared. Peas were frozen which is not entirely bad. Sausages could easily have been cooked to order but were not. They claim to be 'our butcher 's own recipe ' but I can only speculate who the butcher might be. Mash and gravy were OK and my partner 's pie, the only part of his meal different to mine, was just 'OK '. In spite of the modest flow of business, the waitress forgot my bread and butter but did not forget to charge for it. This error was remedied in a style I have made my own over years of practice. If you 're in Waterlooville, you 'll need cheering up. The Butlers Pantry might not do that but you 'll be able to eat cheaply and predictably.
I went to this restaurant for breakfast and was told they didn't have fried eggs because they were out of oil. I find this hard to believe, as there is an Asda just two minutes away. No excuse in my opinion.
The service was disappointing, with tea spilled on the tray and a long wait for our basic meals. We ended up eating separately due to the large interval between servings. The food was decent, but the staff were loudly discussing their topless holiday experiences. The tacky interior of the restaurant was also off-putting, so we won't be returning.
