Legend has it that a real caiman lives nearby ... as a taste tester. Which would explain the small portions. But the setting and service make up for that when the temperature goes above 25°C. And, in the end, you wish said animal had stolen a sip or 2 from your umpteenth Negroni ...

Kaaiman has a welcoming vibe and a fun, quirky interior. Our company of six sat down for starters in one of the salon-style booths and had a few excellent drinks--definitely check the gin menu--and one glass of day-old champagne that bordered on being stale. We had tapas for starters: the grilled octopus (delicious), a plate of jamon rubia gallega (good, but cut too thick) and nachos (unremarkable). The waiter was friendly but clearly inexperienced. We were then shown to our table and things started to go south. If you're a meat eater, definitely give Kaaiman a try. However, if you're not... Probably best stay away. I ordered a salad with grilled pear, blue cheese and walnuts; but found no walnuts and the pear was raw. At a price point of €24, not what I had expected. My mother-in-law was served the exact same plate of salad but topped with octopus instead of pear. My sister-in-law was worse off and got a burnt veggie burger. When she pointed this out, the staff did promptly change the dish and offered her a drink on the house. The men at the table made smarter choices and all three got excellent Angus beef steaks. Overall, Kaaiman is a pleasant place with helpful staff. It is hard to give it a good rating, though, considering the many things that went wrong (forgotten drinks and burnt food, difficulty getting information on allergens). For the price, I expect a less bumpy experience. I would recommend this place for drinks by the canal and maybe a steak.
