We were charmed by the delightful owner and a single local gent eating alone as we looked over the relatively small but solid options menu. Initially, I was struck by the prices: bread coperto E1 per person, water served in pitchers gratis, a liter of reliable house red or white E4. We were on to something impressive in its way if the plate options held their own. Il Pagatore comes with a reputation for generous portions, good meats and pasta with nice vegetables as generally part of a secondo, rather than necessarily at a separate charge. It has a feel of having the good fortune of finding myself at the table in an older relative 's home in Corleone, Sicily, one with undisputed culinary skills, on any given weekday, while feeling completely warm and cozy throughout the meal. For a primi, my wife ordered a light home-made revioli verde with asparagus, porchini fungi in a cream sauce. I chose homemade cavatelli with saffron and mushrooms in a parmigiana cream sauce accompanied by a quarter liter of a house white E2. Each of our pasta dishes was generous, quite tasty and labeled at a meager cost of E 7.50. We shared a white meat chicken in thin strips under provola caciocavall melted cheese topped with very tasty seasoned EVOO chicory for E10, plenty for our most satisfying lunch, as we wished to leave a bit of room for any one of four fascinating dessert options. We chose two portions of the house tiramisu, incredibly light and dusted in excellent deep chocolate. I finished with an espresso. The total fare came to E34 pre-tip. In many other settings throughout Italy, it could have run E50 or more easily as a reasonable deal. It 's a restaurant I 'd return to in a heartbeat were we not moving on to Capestrano, Abruzzo for our next week tomorrow morning. This is the Italy that meets our major theme for this particular nice week stay, my sixth over a lifetime: tutti piccolo paese and well off the usually well-worn tourist tracks. I love Molise! A small but very cozy menu with few dishes but with so much quality from genuine starters excellent handmade soups as I once found myself very well with a good quality of the price I recommend it to everyone.
