Way Of The Wilderness Canoe Outfitters

Out first Boundary Waters experience started at the Way of the Wilderness. If your going to do the BWCA you need to start with an outfitter, at a minimum to get your entry permit. But we used Mark (the owner) to also ferry us out to our campsite. Definitely the way to go! At the end of the Gun Flint Trail, things are pretty simple, but it’s the last civilization you’ll see until you return! Don’t miss the breakfast at the attached Cafe; was awesome!

I ordered a pizza at the Trail's End Cafe. Since it was almost end of season, there were ingredients that were not available which is to be expected. The pizza was very basic nothing special. But I still appreciated the meal.

We have been going to the Trails End on the Gunflint Trail in the Boundary Waters for 27 years. We always rent our canoes from Way Of the Wilderness. Bud has been there for 25+ years and now his son is now helping. The staff they hire is outstanding and fast!

The layout included one sleeping area upstairs and another in the living room downstairs, but there was no door for privacy. We could only see our friends if we went downstairs. Upstairs, there were two twin beds and a queen bed, and the same arrangement was downstairs. The mattresses were old but surprisingly comfortable. The shower functioned, but it leaked water all over the bathroom floor. Unfortunately, sheets and blankets were not provided. On the positive side, everything was clean. We didn’t mind the basic accommodations since we were preparing for a week in the wilderness. The cost was $110. In the morning, I went to the office to check out. The staff member was friendly and helpful, assisting us with our BWCA permit and fishing licenses. However, due to COVID-19, the cafe was closed, so we couldn’t have breakfast there. I had previously visited their small store a few years back, which offers a variety of camping and canoeing supplies. Overall, if you're looking for functional lodging without any frills before heading into the wilderness, this is a solid choice. However, if you're seeking a more upscale vacation spot, I suggest looking elsewhere.
