Very nice ambiente and super friendly staff. the food tastes very delicious and the prices are very appropriate.
I have been in the Cafè Extrablatt in Gelsenkirchen several times, and I always like to go there. The food is super tasty and there is something for everyone. In summer, you can also sit outside, which I find good. There is also a seperate smoking area, which is very important to me as a non-smoker. And the service is very friendly.
My brother and I were on a wee football tourist trip to watch Schalke and came across this place and decided have a bite to eat before the match. The menu was a typical no frills menu but seemed to be a bit pricer than some other the other places that we could have went to. We had Tikka wraps with fries and a couple of beers and although the food was decent and nothing special, the itself beer was excellent. The service was a bit hit and miss. We waited for a few minutes and no waitress came over to us, so my brother had to go to the bar to ask if we could order. After that the waitress was a wee bit more attentive, but we still had to the bar to order our second beer as she was nowhere to be seen half of the time. The bill came to 35 euro including tip which was ok....but felt we could have had better for less elsewhere in town. Its not a bad spot for a quick pit stop before the football, but like I said we felt we could better for less elsewhere. Just average stuff i'm afraid.
I went here with friends and really wish we hadn 't bothered. Although English, one of my friends has lived in Germany for 17 years, has a German wife and speaks fluent German but the waitress who took our order kept making out she couldn 't understand what he was saying. To put in context, over the course of the weekend I was in Germany, I went to 10 other cafes, bars and restaurants with my friend and all the other Germans he spoke with understood him perfectly. She kept repeatedly saying 'Was? ' 'What? ' instead of 'pardon? ' every time he tried to order something for us. Eventually she seemed to get it, but her manner was extremely condescending. My friends left but I decided to stay to have some lunch but wanted a salad without any dressing. Again, the waitress was very patronising and couldn 't believe I didn 't want something on it and was so loud and sarcastic in her disbelief that I eventually relented. When the salad came, the promised olives were not to be seen but worse than that, the salad looked and tasted like it had been thrown in a vat of the cheapest nastiest vegetable oil known to man. On top of that, because the tables weren 't being cleared by the waiting staff there were loads of fruit flies in the restaurant who made a beeline for me when my salad arrived. It was completely inedible and I left most of it. To be fair, when the bill came, looking at my virtually uneaten salad, the waitress didn 't charge me for it but it was too little too late. Oh, and the toilets were absolutely disgusting.
