Down River Ice Cream - Essex

I had read some small blips about Downriver in the past but had never gone there until this summer. Now I'm so disappointed I didn't go sooner. Absolutely wonderful ice cream, the best around. I owned my own shop and made small batch gelato from scratch so trust me, I know and understand ice cream inside and out. The owners are obviously dedicated and take great pride in their product. The ice cream texture is spot on, smooth and creamy and it is wonderfully dense. I really like their selection of flavors and they aren't afraid to push the envelope with some flavor combinations. In my opinion their fruit flavors are the best. Nice chunks of fresh fruit (strawberry, peach, and apple and perfect flavor, which believe me is not easy to do. It takes a lot of dedication to your craft to make fruit flavors this good. Head over while peach is still around!!

Simply the best homemade ice cream on Cape Ann. A wide range of flavors that never disappoint. It's well worth the drive from my home in Marblehead whenever I'm cruising by on Route 133 in Essex, MA.

We absolutely love Downriver Ice Cream. We live in Exeter, NH and made the drive to Essex, MA just so I could get an orange creamsicle cone. Friendly staff, huge portions, relaxing setting.

Reminder....cash only. Ice cream is fantastic, creamy and thick. Love the peanut butter corruption, apple pie, fresh strawberry, deer tracks. Each one is perfect.
