Bidrage med feedbackI see good reviews for the Nepalese food BUT definitely DO NOT GO FOR A SUNDAY LUNCH! How you can make supermarket sliced beef so tough, dry and tasteless is quite unbelievable! That together with way overcooked veg and a sad and floppy Yorkshire pudding made the whole meal unappetising and a total waste of money. Time was when the Compasses would be booked out for the full 4 hour service period; yesterday there were about 14 or so others in the souless dining room. Says it all really. You have been warned.
Excellent Gurkha meal served with atentive waiters. We ate in the conservatory overlooking the garden. The food was spicey and quite different from a traditional Inian meal.
Had read excellent reviews of the food here and of the lovely rural location and it is indeed in a lovely spot. The pub was full of diners and locals at the bar and is obviously very popular. We just wanted to enjoy a drink in the garden, which lets the venue down a little bit. It appears that very little thought has been put into the outside space and the garden had an odd assortment of furniture which wasn't particularly comfortable to sit on. Unfortunately there was a very strong smell across much of the garden where there are metal drain covers in the lawn, for what I guess must be septic tanks. This meant we had to move tables a couple of times and ended up having to sit near the noisy fan from the kitchen to avoid the smell. Would happily return to dine inside, maybe this is more of a winter pub.
The Nepalese food here was absolutely gorgeous, the momos tasted just like in Nepal super fresh and great portion size! The lamb curry was beautiful, and packed full of flavour, and the naans you could tell were homemade. Great friendly service. Seriously fantastic!
I do not usually write reviews, however, I have just tried food from the newly released Nepalese menu at the Compasses and it was absolutely packed full of flavour. Lots of spices showing through with a nice 'afterburn ' of heat and despite being a curry it felt light and fresh. Best takeaway I have tried in the area. I will definitely be working my way through the menu in the future! Highly recommend.
