I had an appointment at Ninewells today. Having worked out where my appointment was, I decided to buy a tea and snack from the Segafredo cafe in the Ninewells entrance as I was hungry. There wasn't much on offer so I bought a tea and a Fudge Doughnut. The latter was in a clear plastic package, which obscured sight of the product. It cost £1.75. The Fudge Doughnut turned out to be the most disgusting bakery item I had ever had the misfortune to try and eat. I tried to scrape off the sickly thick layer of fudge on the top, but it was still disgusting. It turned out it had a custard filling. The doughnut was overdosed in sugar and calories. Notably, one can buy doughnuts in lots of shops and cafes that are not disgusting to eat, rather they are enjoyable to eat, but not at Segafredo. Given that Ninewells is a hospital, with people there for treatment, not for a trip out, one might expect that the products on offer would be healthy products, with relatively low calorie and sugar content, not maxed out on sugar and calories. When I complained to the staff, they said they were from a local bakery business and the ingredients were noted on the packet. I recognise that the product purchasing decisions are made by managers, typically not based locally, which is why the staff are so defensive. Does Segafredo have such contempt for their customers, that they think it's Ok to serve up disgusting products?
I have never experienced a worse work environment than this restaurant. The management shows no regard for their employees, and the overall atmosphere is disorganized and unprofessional. The prices are exorbitant. However, I was fortunate to be assisted by a very kind and efficient young man who was working tirelessly on his own to serve a long queue of customers. It is frustrating to see a lack of care for employees in a workplace. If the restaurant is understaffed, it is likely due to their own actions causing people to leave and not want to work there. It is unfair to complain about being short-staffed in such circumstances.
I have been here for 3 weeks now and I have been having 4 or 5 drinks a day, including hot chocolate for £2.40 a cup. That adds up to about £10 a day, which amounts to over £70 a week. After 3 weeks, I have spent £210 on drinks alone. Oh my goodness, I need to go home.
The restaurant is overpriced with items like a $3.50 doughnut. The food selection is poor and the seating area is cramped and untidy. Customers are basically a captive audience.
