Bidrage med feedbackThe Modern Dragon is a wonderful little find. The service is exceptional, especially considering the restaurant is run by a lovely elderly Chinese man. The food is authentic, with the sweet and sour pork being particularly delicious, along with the crackers (the best I've ever had). The atmosphere is relaxed and cozy, truly a hidden gem. The décor may be a bit outdated, but it adds to the charm of this average Chinese restaurant in China. They offer a variety of sodas for children and you can bring your own drinks. With only two restaurants in the area, this will be our go-to choice for dining in the city.
I don't quite know how to sum up this cozy little restaurant. When I walked in, I was warmly greeted by a friendly man, which was nice. However, as I looked around the restaurant, I found myself remembering I had a prior engagement elsewhere. It was a shame because I was really hungry and could tell that the chef probably cooked delicious, authentic meals. But I couldn't overlook the decor and the bag of rice by the front door.
After settling into our accommodations at the nearby Donnybrook Motel Motor Lodge and spending some time at the Apple Fun Park, we set out to find dinner. It was a quiet Tuesday night and many places seemed closed. We had previously ordered from Eagle Boys Pizza during a visit, but found that they had been replaced by a local pizzeria, which was also closed. We stumbled upon a local Chinese restaurant and decided to give it a try. The owner, who seemed to be the only worker that night, warmly greeted us and patiently helped us navigate the menu. We ordered steamed rice, fried rice, lemon chicken, sweet and sour pork, and Szechuan beef. The prices were reasonable and we were told the food would be ready in 30 minutes. The restaurant itself was quite outdated with old furniture and decor, including a vintage collection of soft drinks and a radio from the 1970s. Unfortunately, the food did not live up to our expectations. The fried rice was bland, the lemon chicken was tough and drowned in sauce, and the sweet and sour pork was overcooked. The Szechuan beef was the only decent dish, but it was not enough to salvage the meal. The prices were comparable to other restaurants in the area, so we were disappointed with the quality. The sight of a bag of rice on the floor near the entrance was also off-putting. Overall, while we understand the challenges of running a business in a small town, we don't foresee the Modern Dragon Chinese Restaurant improving in its current state. We hope that they can make some changes for the better in the future, as it's important for small towns to have dining options.
Pizza Hut is offering daily deals on their pizza, and they are truly super dealsToday was the Canadian which has pepperoni, bacon and mushroom.
The Modern Dragon is a great little find. The service is exceptional, especially considering the restaurant is operated by one person, a lovely elderly Chinese man. The restaurant is authentic, the sweet and sour pork is fantastic, as are the prawn crackers (these are the best I have had) and the atmosphere is relaxed and homely; all around a winner. The décor is dated but I would not be surprised to learn it was indicative of your average Chinese restaurant in China. There are soda selections for the kids and it is BYO drink anything you please. As one of only two restaurants in DB we will certainly choose this when deciding where to eat out in town.
