Got some takeout from Galway Hooker the other night and was it ever delicious. Didn't get a lot of food but what I got was top notch. Ordered the Garlicky Tuscan Shrimp as an appetizer and Fish and Chips as the main. The shrimp dish came with some fresh tasting medium sized shrimp in a hot buttery, garlicky, lemony (there was a wedge of lemon floating around in there) broth and included slices of french bread with some herbs and Parmesan shreds sprinkled on top. The fish and chips was a big thick piece of whitefish in a real beer batter. It was fried perfectly crisp and was moist and flavorful on the inside. The chips were outstanding as well and my youngest, an ultimate chip snob, ate up all that I did not. As with anything fried that you get to go it did well with a short trip to the toaster oven but really, it was fairly hot and crisp right from the box. I just gilded the lily a bit. Really the toasts got the most benefit as it allowed the cheese to melt a bit. The meal came with a generous side of ketchup and of tartar sauce. The sauce had more dill flavor than I would choose but that's nothing more than personal preference. Well done GH!
I've been a customer of this place for years. The building is amazing, the service was regularly fantastic and the food (Irish cuisine) was always top notch. Went in with some friends on a recent Saturday night and oh my how things have changed. There were three people in the entire building (it was just before 8pm). There wasn't anyone at the bar. The bartender told us they no longer had Miller Lite, Sycamore Mountain Candy and Wicked Weed Pernicious on draft. My partner settled with a Miller Lite bottle, which happened to be the last one in the building. They were also out of Jameson. Onto the food, I ordered the Reuben, which was my traditional go to. What was once an amazing sandwich was a soggy mess of bread and thousand island dressing covering what was some of the toughest corned beef I've ever encountered. My partner order the fish and chips and the fries were cold. Our other friend had wings and they were undercooked. I know this place is under new ownership and has had several managers since then. They took a staple, a landmark of Lake Norman and flushed it away. What a sad state of affairs. I won't be back.
What did you guys do??? You took a beautiful local spot that was warm and cozy and made it look like a bare prison So sad. The food is mediocre now. But overpriced too. Regardless, you destroyed a gem we had in the area
I used to love this place. I should have known something was wrong when I walked in at 7pm on a Friday night and next to no one was inside. The previous menu had so many good items but has all been done away with. I sat at the empty bar to order a drink and order some sandwiches to go..I tried to ask a few questions but the bartender was more interested in emptying the dishwasher. It's a real shame, I won't be back.
