Bidrage med feedbackWe were presented to this jewel of local friends. The owner is the fisherman, his wife cooks. Every single dish tasted fantastic. The setting is a somewhat externally rustic setting. On the walls are fishing nets. I liked the feeling of decoration. The restaurant is pretty hidden. Sidestreet and the entrance are just a woven door. Make sure to note the address and telephone number when you are on the move, as there are no signs. I look forward to returning to this place soon.
Lima is the worlds unofficial (or official, depending upon who you talk with ceviche capital of the world. There is an entire culture of cevicherias and they come with a full set of unwritten rules and generalized decorum. One unwritten rule is you never eat ceviche past early in the afternoon. Hence the reason every cevicheria is packed for lunch (which stretches from 130 until 4 pm in Perú . Restaurant Sonia is no different. Go on a Saturday afternoon or a Sunday and you’ll be met with a big crowd of families, young people and groups of friends. It’s a fun environment filled with music, laughter and happy conversations. And, it’s not the best cevicheria in Lima. Heck, it’s not even the best ceviche restaurant in Chorillos. The quality of the fish is very good and the atmosphere is delightful. Be forewarned, the portions (as compared to most cevicherias are small. You’ll also note that the prices are a bit disproportionate for what you get. All of that said it’s a fun place and you can do a lot worse for a nice spot to get high quality ceviche and fish dishes in the Ceviche Capital of the World.
We thoroughly enjoyed our lunch at Sonia. The food was delicious and the atmosphere was delightful, including a small band that played at just the right volume so that it was easy to converse. Great ceviche. Loved the lemonade, too.
The food and place is average at best. It is also very expensive for what it is. I believe this place has been overhyped by well known chefs. The jalea was salty, the ceviche was alright, the only thing that was good was the whole fried fish. I would not be returning to this place nor do I recommend it. There are places way nicer, with better food, a better dining experience, and less expensive in the area.
